MrsPPP:  i dont have any experience with this but i think it is odd that a jeweler isnt able to unsolder a ring. They must not be very experienced and since they are honest that they cant figure out how to do it, I wouldnt try to push them and have them completely mess up the rings. Can you mail the rings back to the original jeweler?

This is super weird…I have mine soldered and they have been unsoldered and resoldered at least once for engraving and repair. I say pick your rings up and take them to a different jeweler who knows what they’re doing!

MrsPPP:  That doesn’t make sense unless the jeweler that soldered them did something really weird. Soldering and unsoldering are easy.

My advice? Go pick up your rings before they do any damage and find another jeweler. This should be a fairly simple repair.

Of your ring has tons of pave and detail, it is possible that unsold ering them can damage your rings. So maybe this is what they meant. I’d take them to a very experienced jeweler

I took a bunch of metalsmithing classes in college. In my experience the only way to ‘unsolder’ something would be to saw the two items apart with a small jewelry saw (the blades are like..1mm thick) and then polish the extra solder away with fine grit sandpaper and various polishing tools.

When you solder something together, you generally take a metal and put it in between the two rings. You heat the metal with a torch until it melts, and then the metal from both rings bond together.

If you have an oddly shaped ring or as a PP said, a lot of pave,  it might be hard to saw the two rings apart without ruining the design of the ring.

MrsPPP:  It sounds like you might need to find another jeweler.

I was told my mom’s set couldn’t be unsoldered because the metal was too thin; it had been worn down to the point that neither ring on its own would be sturdy enough once they were unsoldered. Perhaps it is an issue like that?
