so a disclaimer – i spent most summers working for my dad who owned his own business.
besides that i’ve had two interviews in my life, both of which i wore black dress pants, a nice shirt, and an office jacket type shrug.
both times i was waaay overdressed but my dad says that it leaves a good impression.
my question is – i have an interview for a clothing store in the local mall on saturday, and i need to know whats appropriate to wear? do i go in my business attire or tone it down a bit?

Depends- if you’re interviewing at a really fashion-forward or trendy store I would wear something that matches with the store’s atmosphere. Though personally, I think you can NEVER be overdressed for an interview.

i work in a career center… you should definitely wear a suit. even if most of the employees there dress more casually, it’s still good to be a “step up” from the norm during your interview. wear the suit and keep your hair/nails/perfume conservative.
good luck!

a light gray suit would be great. a little less stuffy than a dark suit, but still formal. You can jazz it up with a cool blouse under the jacket.

A suit’s always nice. It says “i want this job” and is professional. You could throw something colorful on so it’s not too stuffy since it isn’t necessarily an office. Leaves a good impression though.
