So my Darling Husband has been at his job for a little over a year, when he joined the company he had very high hopes of his career there and felt that it was the next stepping stone. It is a small company but the owner really sold him, and promised him the world. He promised a very sizeable bonus which he never got, he then never got the raise he was promised, and when he went to him to present his case he was basically told by the COO ( who my Darling Husband directly reports into) not to accept anything from the owner/company, that he was cheap and pretty much lies to people to to get them to do what he wants. At that point my Darling Husband started looking for a new job because he felt that his future career was not in a place like that where they treated their employees like that. It also didn’t help that they basically told him that for the birth of our baby he used up his week of vacation and they were not going to give him any time and that he could only take 1 day unpaid.
My Darling Husband then gets a job offer from another company, the salary was not 100% what he was looking for, it’s a very small increase, and the benefits are not that wonderful with the new company but nor where they with his old company either, however, the growth at this new job he feels is there and feels that this company really does care about their employees, the new boss already told him that he can take whatever days he needs for the baby. Darling Husband and the new boss have hit it off really well too. He has already signed the offer letter, but was waiting to do that before he gave notice, which he did today. That is where the problem presents.
He gave notice and his boss counter, without even knowing how much $$ he got offered at the other job and he countered $25K more than what he is making now and at the new job and said they will write in a job completion bonus of 30k into a contract for when he completes the project, which will be in the next 8 months. At the new job they said he would get a job completion bonus but the job is a 2+ year project and they obviously can’t tell now how much he would recieve then.
My Darling Husband is super torn and doesn’t know what to do, and I don’t know what to tell him to do. A part of me feels like he should go back to the new company and try and get more money but I feel like that might be totally burning his bridges with this new place, but then a part me and I know my Darling Husband feels scared that this could be a repeat of his last job that it looks great now and then when he starts working there, there is no raises or bonuse and he is back to square 1.
Any savvy thoughts on what he should do?
