@KatNYC2011: I am being underpaid too… I was told this by my supervisor and even though I was suppose to get a raise back in September they won’t talk to me about it until July. Yea, not gonna lie that pisses me off so I totally feel your frustration. Oh and I don’t nearly love my job as much as you do.

I cannot believe that they think they can hold employee morale after doing this to you.

Ugh that sucks so much!  I am underpaid at my job and they don’t acknowledge it, which makes me more resentful about it!

@KatNYC2011: Yeah that’s so not fair!  The worst part for me is that someone who doesn’t even has his associates yet makes the same as me and a ton of people with just bachelors degrees make more.  Sorry, not trying to threadjack!

I would have a sit down with them and put it all on the table.  They have no reason to let you go based on performance and you don’t have to demand anything.  Just say “the following things were supposed to happen. I’ve performed in a specific way (beneficial to the company) and it has not happened – I need to know what the situation is in order to consider exploring more options” etc.

I’m underpaid, too (federal civilian) compared to those around me who do less, but we all need to stop the “at least I have a job!” mentality b/c then we just get taken advantage of more.

@KatNYC2011: Yeah for sure, I hate that I have to remind myself to be thankful for my job sometimes.

@KatNYC2011:I was in the same position as you until 3 months ago, and I was forced to jump ship.

I received a promotion in the fall of 2008 with 50% of my raise taking place immediately and 50% coming on January 1, 2009. On Jan 1, my company put into place a salary freeze and no one got any raises or bonuses, even if it was promised to them before that date. On Jan 1, 2010, I asked my boss about my raise now that the salary freeze was lifted and I got the same response as you “you’re on the list.”

I checked back several times throughout 2010 and got nowhere, so I decided to send my resume to a select number of companies in my area. I received a call from a company and they brought me in for an interview. When they asked my current salary, the HR lady almost spit out her water. She couldn’t believe how underpaid I was for my experience.

The new company offered me the same level position at 30% more than I was making. When I put in my notice, my old company scrambled to meet the new offer, but at that point, I was done. If this new company who barely knew anything about me would offer 30% more as a STARTING SALARY, I couldn’t stomach staying at my old company where that new salary would probably stick with me for years and I would be in the same position a few years down the road.

It was a tough decision. I loved my job and the people I worked with, but work is about earning a living, and at the end of the day, you have to feel good about the return you’re getting.

@KatNYC2011:did he give you a time line?

It’s super frustrating and demotivating.  I also think it’s never the wrong time to look for other work if you’re worth more. I do all the time.
