So I got a temp job for 2 weeks or so as an election clerk.  I’m not sure if I will have a job after that but this is something for now right? *sigh*  Hoping something more substancial will come along but with my condition I can only do jobs where I am sitting.  I can’t wait til it goes away.

@beekiss:  Temp agencies can help you find temp to perm jobs, not just temporary or long term temporary. There are also placement agencies associated with some temp agencies that help find permanent jobs. I am going to be using Accountemps and they’re associated with Robert Half which is the direct placement side. I think they might only do accounting but I’m sure there are places out there that are more similar to your field.

@sara_tiara:  The nice thing with small towns is that the cost of living is usually much less. The only disadvantage would be if you had a long commute with the way gas prices are.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR. So they’re finally hiring me in, starting Monday. Awesome! Except that I’m only getting $1/hr raise! WTF! Everyone else I’ve spoken to has always been hired in at the rate the company pays the temp agency, and I get screwed. Awesome. Low pay, no benefits. Why the fuck did I even go to college? I have a wedding to pay for, bills to pay, student loans that are in deferment because I can’t pay them. I think my paperwork says that I’ll get a review and another raise in 90 days, which SUCKS because I’ve already been here 90 days. And I have to do all of this stupid training that I shouldn’t have to do because a) I have a BUSINESS DEGREE YES I KNOW HOW TO USE OUTLOOK FFS, and b) I’ve already been here over 3 months!

@vorpalette:  The other people may have been exaggerating. If your company uses a temp agency they’re obviously trying to keep their overhead low by avoiding a high turnover rate in permanent employees. The rate they pay the temp agency covers everything, now they’re going to bring you on and pay for your benefits, holidays, vacations etc. It would just be a bad business decision to pay you what they were paying the temp agency. I got a $1 raise at my last position when they took me off of the temp agency’s payroll, it’s pretty standard, you have to think of the other benefits when taking your raise into account.

Hey bees, I’ve been applying to jobs on craigslist, monster, careerbuilder, indeed. I’ve registered with some temp agencies and direct placement agencies. Does anybody have any other advice? I feel awkward just sitting at home applying to things on the computer, I need to come up with something soon. I may even apply at some of the restaurants nearby, I’m just waiting to hear on one job before I do something like that. I interviewed Friday with a CPA and I honestly think I have a good chance of getting the job and even though it doesn’t start until December I wouldn’t want to pick up a job just for a month. If I don’t get the job with the CPA I think I will start waitressing and maybe working retail. I have my Associate’s Degree in Accounting and a ton of experience, a few different industries over the course of 6 years. I wish my company would have just laid me off instead of forcing me to quit the way they did, at least I’d have unemployment. I know I could have made things happen differently, but my sanity and my health were already suffering, and although my marriage wasn’t in trouble or anything, it was definitely affected. I am just hoping not to be unemployed too long, I made a rash decision when I quit and my husband isn’t happy because we didn’t discuss it at this point and he wasn’t prepared. Hell, I wasn’t prepared. I just need to be really aggressive in my job search and I’m sure you all have been too. Any ideas or tips for me?

Hey everyone! I love these threads and definitely would love to see them keep going. Would someone be willing to start a Part 3 so we can close this one down? I didn’t realize how far past 500 posts it had gotten. Thanks so much! 🙂

@Gemstone:  Will you pin it to the top of the boards so other people will start using it?
