So, I applied for a job a couple weeks ago and received positive responses right away. As in I got a call an hour after I submitted my resume, and I got a second call a day later from the person actually hiring. I was scheduled for an interview a couple days after that. The interview was cancelled because the person hiring had a personal problem, which I was very understanding about. My interview was rescheduled as soon as she got back to work, which was about a week later. The interview was weird. I wasn’t asked any questions, and it was more of a tour of the facility. I was told 30 seconds into the interview that there would be a second interview over the phone, and that this was just a preinterview to make sure I understood the job. They didn’t want another copy of my resume (which I had taken the time to print out on fancy paper) and I had to work in details of myself into the conversation to make sure I stood out. At the end of the interview they gave me mixed messages. They didn’t know what kind of applicant they were looking for, and acted like it was either someone like me (a soon to be college grad, starting the day after graduation) or someone with 20 years of experience in a related field. The job is a newly created position. I matched the description of the ideal applicant perfectly, with a few bonus items. I do not have 20 years of experience like the new person they said they might want. I restated the position I’m coming from and gave reasons for why I’m better than the other type of applicant they were considering. They insisted they would call me to set up a second interview, and mentioned that they would be out of town for one week but would call to schedule it right afterwards. The next interview would be with someone higher up (and I was already being interviewed with someone pretty high up). I sent a thank you email to the person who interviewed me the next business day restating how excited I was about the job and some of the reasons I am a good fit for the company. I was planning on calling to follow up today or tomorrow.
Well today I got a two sentence email telling me there would not be a second interview. I’m annoyed. I totally understand they don’t have to hire me. I also understand that there are even more overqualified applicants out there. But I wish I wouldn’t have wasted a month getting excited about the job. And I wish that they didn’t tell me about the second interview before they decided if they wanted to give it to me. I know I was one of the last applicants to interview, so if they already had a favorite they should have known about it. I also wish they had acurately described the candidate they were seeking, since they clearly have more qualifications than me. I have been very careful to aplpy for positions I think I would enjoy and that I am not under or overqualified for so that I don’t waste my time or someone elses.
And mostly I’m just starting to get nervous because I graduate in a few weeks and while I’ve applied for 30+ jobs in the last couple months, I have received more positive feedback about this position than any other.
End vent. Oh and I’m mostly writing this so I can get it out of my system so that I can write a lovely response email thanking them for their time and encouraging them to consider me if another position opens up that I would be a good fit for.
