I wasn’t an English major, but I work in the Public Relations industry and I know quite a few publicists who were English majors. Also, editorial work in other industries outside of publishing, for instance working in marketing & communications offices in higher ed, non-profits, etc. Almost every medium-sized/large company has someone doing marketing/communications.

The issue is that you’ve been doing admin for 8 years, so you’d have to futz with your resume a bit to make it more marketable outside of those particular jobs. And you might have to start from the bottom.

Good luck!

I was an English major and eveyone always asked if I was going to become a teacher. Eventually I figured, why not? I started to apply to grad school for education but when it came time to write the essay, “Why do you want to be a teacher?” I didn’t have an answer.

So I waitressed for a year and then went back to school for Chinese medicine. I’m now a licensed acupuncturist and own my own clinic. I have three blogs and write a monthly newsletter so at least the English degree wasn’t a total loss.

Good luck!
