- Wedding: October 2012
So I have recently been experiencing a lot of dress regret, as some of you may know. I got engaged on Sunday March 18th. We set our wedding date for October 20, 2012. I went to a dress shop either the following Monday or Tuesday just to browse and was told, “You’re getting married in October this year! You need to order a dress ASAP! It will take 5 months to come in and you’ll need at least 6-8 weeks for alterations. You’re really pushing it!” So naturally, I panicked.
I went out that very first Saturday, March 24th, with my little sister to David’s Bridal then to one more local Bridal Shop. I didn’t like anything at DB that the girl brought me to try on. But I had specifically chosen the local bridal shop because they had a specific Allure dress I wanted to try on that sort of reminded me of Belle from Beauty and the Beast. It is Allure 8869 for curious minds:
I also had them pull a few other dresses for me to try on. Well, I looked too matronly in the Allure 8869. It wasn’t terrible but there was no choir of angels singing for it. By this point, I had already been shoved into seveal frilly dresses that day and was getting exhausted and was starting to go emotionally numb.
Then they put me in Allure 8919:
The simplicity of it, and the buttons all the way down the back (without the bow) won both my sister and I over as “the one”. So I took them up on their, “if you buy it today, you get a 10% discount,” offer. My sister snapped a few pictures of me in it and promised to email them ASAP.
As soon as I saw the pictures, I had dress regret. I didn’t like the way I looked in the pictures. And I thought the dress looked boring in the pictures. Plus it had no sleeves. I am really uncomfortable in strapless dresses. I rarely wear one with out a cardigan covering my shoulders. So I started panicking. When I ordered it, they told me it would come at the end of July. It came on May 4th. I then felt “robbed” of the whole shopping experience because I had been told to order right away and didn’t spend much time searching.
When I went to pick up the dress, I bought one of their sample belts from them to add to the dress for some bling. It is slightly reminiscent of the one on the Paloma Blanca 4203, except it’s a flower shape in the middle on the one I bought (and I’d wear at the bottom of my waist, not under my bust):

So then I proceed to annoy you bees with a few posts about straps or no straps, or this dress vs. that dress, etc. Ultimately, I went to a different local bridal shop, explained my dress regret and the nice lady let me try on a million different dresses.
The good news is that I didn’t like a single one better than the 8919. I did sort of like the illusion top on one of them, but it won’t work with my grandma’s pearls that I’m dedicated to wear, so I’m not stuck on it.
Tonight after work I curled my hair, pinned it back in a low bun sort of style, put on my grandma’s pearls and the dress…….. I’ve decided that…. I really like my dress. The A-line is good for my shape. The full skirt gives the ball gown appearance I had hoped for. The sweetheart neckline is very feminine. And I’ve also decided they had me order it one size too big. I got an 8. I was able to hook and zip it with the back on my front then spin it around to be in the right place. I probably shouldn’t be able to do that. I probably should have been told to get a 6. The never measured me. Oh well. I think a seamstress can help.
Once it is fitted to me, I will decide whether or not to add tank straps, cap sleeves, or a halter strap. I had an ivory ribbon that I was using to play around, and while I norally avoid anything halter top in normal clothing because it exaggerates my already big (for my frame) chest, I think I’m leaning towards a halter strap.
I also really don’t know if I’ll end up using the fancy belt I bought or not, haha. Waste of money if I don’t. But when the pearl and crystal headband I ordered the day I bought the dress finally arrives, I will be able to know if the belt goes or not.
Thanks for listening to my dress regret journey 🙂
