We went to Cairns for 8 nights and Sydney for 5 nights. Travel and accommodation cost somewhere around £3000 and we paid for activities as and when we felt like doing them, round trip but we did book around a year in advance for everything. It was fairly hot in Cairns, around high 20s to 30 degrees Celsius but it was chillier in Sydney, around 10 – 15 degrees C.

Hope that’s somewhat helpful!

We are going to Miami for 3 nights and to Key West for 6.  Neither of us has ever been there and we wanted to combine a little urban fun with the relaxed atmosphere of the Keys.  Plus, we’re looking forward to the drive from Miami to Key West, which is said to be gorgeous.  Because it’s the off season, we’re getting great deals on nice hotels (the Ritz in South Beach!) and super cheap airfare on a nonstop flight.  I know it’s going to be hot in Miami, but our hotel is right on the beach, so that should help.  In Key West, because it’s an island and gets all those sea breezes, I read that the temperature stays pretty pleasant.  I was worried that we’d regret going to Florida in July but I think it’s going to work out great.  Plus, we are getting so much more bang for our buck, which allows us to stay a little longer.  If all else fails, we’ll just have to stay in bed in the AC!

I forgot to mention prices: $169 RT each for airfare from DC, about $200 a night at the Ritz South Beach, $400 a night for an oceanfront suite at the hotel in Key West (includes a lot– breakfast, drinks, spa credit, etc), about $350 for a rental car for 9 days.

We spent 3 days in Napa (best idea ever, wish we would have stayed longer!), 2 days in San Francisco, and 3 days in San Diego.  It gave us a little bit of everything from adventure to beach and with food, car rental, hotel, airfare, winery tours, etc it was between $3-4000, a little closer to the 4 end.

@MrsScottie: It is insanely hot here during July and the sand on the beaches is scorching, so definitely be ready for that.  The Keys should be a little less crowded, but I swear South Beach is always packed.  Watch out for the toll roads to the Keys too, they can get pricey and they only take cash or the Sunpass, but you can take 95 to US 1, which can be a fun drive getting to see a lot of the southern part of the city, like historic Coral Gables.  We love the Keys though, I hope you have fun!
