No, I think it’s cool. As long as you trust her taste (or don’t mind too much if something goes awry) I think it’s great to have a little surprise on your wedding day.

That’s awesome! I almost said the same thing to my cake maker… but she insisted we plan it all out! lol

I was reading the thread about wedding regrets and a lot of people mentioned being unhappily surprised by what the cake looked like. (As in, they did not expect to be surprised; it just came out different than what they asked for.) So I think if you go into it expecting to be surprised, and open to whatever your baker comes up with, you’ll be ahead of the game! I’m planning to ask my venue (a restaurant) to make a small cake that looks like a wedding cake and, beyond that, I don’t really care. So I guess it will be a surprise!

@Eglantine:  I so agree.. I also think the same thing applies to hair! The best updo’s/partial updo’s/formal hair do’s I’ve gotten were not when I showed them what I wanted… it was when I told them what I liked and let them roll with it!

Sounds like this may have caused your cake problem! I’ve found that specifics are always better than “surprise me!”

She may be less likely to give you a refund since you gave her creatvie license with some of the parts that you didnt like

I think it’s nice that you can be so relaxed about that! There are some things I don’t care that much about, but the cake wasn’t one of them. We went to a custom bake shop and she is amazing!! The cake is almost $900 for 135 people. I used her for my shower cake it and was even better than the picture I gave her. I look forward to seeing my cake!!!!! Some things I just have spent too much money on for it to be a surprise. The flowers, however, I am not too picky about!!

My Step Grandmother in Law offered to make the cake but didn’t want to do how I wanted… so now I have no idea what I’m getting. Your brave. Part of me is excited but part of me is super scared….

I guess thats cause I spent ALOT of time looking at cakes and was really set on what I wanted ( pearls) but she didnt’ want to cause they taste gross- so that makes me know at least its going to taste delicious!
