People are so misinformed it is ridiculous.  The fact that they are getting their fertility knowledged based on a whack job speaks pretty highly of their intelligence as well.  A close friend of mine is going through IVF right now, and she has mentioned the same thing.

Good luck on your treatments! 🙂

Sorry that people are bothering you. Coming from someone who does not have babies and whose family has not undergone fertility treatments I don’t know very much about the different kids. If I didn’t spend so much time on the weddingbee I would not have realized that there are two different kinds of IVF or similar types of treatments to it. People only know what they see or hear and often times it is a blip on the scale of reality.

I actually know of a few fertility doctors, who make you sign a release that if you conceive more than 2 babies during treatment that you will submit to a reduction in the number of fetuses, If you refuse to sign, they will not treat you!

Soooooo annoying, even if it is meant as a “joke.”  Ugh.  Hang in there, sweetkate!

Meh…they’re just uninformed. Probably because they only hear about the really extreme cases and usually when there a huge sets of multiples there is some fertility treatment link.

Besides Octomom is a crazy lady and her doc was obviously not acting in the best interest of his patient.

IVF may give you twins but it wouldn’t give you poor judgement.

@sweetkate: I’ve never heard that stat, but it makes me feel not so alone in this whole thing.  But, it makes sense – I have 5 friends that are preggo – making me the 1 in 6!

@sweetkate:  Why on earth would you tell anyone you’re going through fertility treatments?  If you invite people into your life by sharing such intensely personal information, you also invite their comments.

I too am going through fertility treatments and have chosen to share it with those near and dear to me.  It’s not something that’s easy or enjoyable, so it’s wonderful to have a support system to help through a difficult time.

While, yes, you do open yourself up for comments, it’s still ok to be bothered by them.  And, this is supposed to be a nice place where we can go to vent our feelings or frustrations without getting ridiculed for being upset about something that’s already difficult enough.  When something good happens or someone wants to share exciting news, no one says anything or makes them feel bad for feeling excited.  The same should be done for less pleasant feelings/emotions/topics.

I have a cousin that is pregnant with her first through IVF, and my parents were like, “Are you sure you want 11 kids?”.

She had to explain that they only transfer 1 embryo the first shot, and will only go up to three. It made me laugh that she actually had to explain it.

Lisa105 loads of people, especially after a couple are married ask if they will be starting a family soon. Anyone that answers that is sharing ‘intensely personal information’ as you put it. Having fertility treatment is nothing to be ashamed of and there if you’re comfortable with it there is no differenct between telling someone that or about any other medical treatment

I do always wonder if someone will have twins if they are having treatments but that’s just because there is an elevated chance and also because my brother and sister who are twins were concieved this way.

Octomom though . . ouch. That is an unnecessary thing for people to say to you
