Get a bridesmaid’s dress in white.  That may fix the problem.  ๐Ÿ™‚

I agree with the PP, you shouldn’t have to pay more because it’s white if you order a bridesmaid dress. I was going to get one for $115 dollars, but decided to spend a bit more.

My sister bought this dress from AA

http://www.alfredangelo.com/collections/productdisplay.aspx?productID=6f62d306-9003-4d09-8414-5327b782c3f4&categoryID=772f03c9-de43-4942-bfa0-da77e21ebd65&pg=1&colorId1=

In dark red for my wedding and it’s GORGEOUS.  It looks a million times better in person than it does on the model in the photo.  It cost $198 and it’s a bridemaid dress. Definitely worth trying on even though it looks terrible on the model.

Haha I feel like that sometimes too!  The other day, I was looking up make up artists prices…why is that make up/hair for “special occasion” is $100, but make up/hair for a wedding is all of a sudden $350.  Isn’t it the same face and same hair you’re working on?

For what it’s worth, when I was looking into having a wedding dress made, the cost of a one off handmade dress was roughly the same as a dress from a bridal shop.

Fabric would be $800-$1,000 for approx ten metres of fabric (trains and ruching need alot of fabric!) and the charge for the designing, pattern making, sewing etc came out to about $750.  I bought a brand new dress for just under $2,000.

If your budget is under $200, you can look at White House|Black Market, Ann Taylor, Limited, or J. Crew. You’ll probably have to catch something on sale, but they DO have inexpensive wedding gowns.

You should also keep an eye on the pre-owned websites and the shops that sell samples.  See my list below.

The color isn’t what’s making dresses expensive.  A well made, long, red, mermaid dress would cost over $200 as well…unless you went for an inexpensively made prom dress.

The pre-owned sites:

Pre-owned Wedding Dresses
Once Wed
Recycled Bride
Bravo Bride

The sample/resale shops:

Church Street Bridal (online and b&m, proceeds go to charity, gets donations from Kleinfeld)
Vows (online and b&m)
Your Dream Dress
Le Dress Boutique (online and b&m)
Encore Bridal (online and b&m)
Fabulous Frocks of Charleston (online and b&m)
White Chicago (closing soon!)

Also keep an eye on The Limited, they have an online bridal line with an awesome return policy. If you catch a sale, and get a coupon from retailmeknot, you can bring it down to $150 easily.

I second the used dress sites- they’re pretty awesome.

I would follow @Jeannine @ Small Chic ‘s suggestions- there are tons of deals to be had on gowns. Also, look here in the wb classifieds. I found mine that way (a sample) & it was $150 including shipping.

It is funny how if there is bridal in front of something than it is at least twice as much! Weddings are a huge money pit ๐Ÿ™‚

Its so funny as soon as you mention wedding prices go up. Gratuity etc. White tents vs. green, white dresses. Its frustrating and Im sorry I hope you find something that you like in your budget!!

I second the second-hand dress websites and also suggest Ebay.  That’s where I found mine.  My boss’s daughter found her’s there too.

There are quite a few mermaid dresses with sweetheart necklines for bridesmaids. You can order most bridesmaid dresses in white or ivory. Mine was Wtoo 856 and it cost $225. (Maybe less sweetheart neckline than you’re looking for?)
