@Jbbee:  @mariematt: I’m sure you two are completely correct and I am just a neurotic nutcase. I have shown my dear groom samples of first look photos I like. I have told him that if he doesn’t make one of those faces then the wedding is off! Lol. I am entirely expecting him to be the one who cries like a baby, not me. I guess I’m not as fussed with pictures of me as I am with pictures of him.

@jdhall89:  I’m not sure about an assistant, but I paid for the biggest package so that I could have a second photographer. I really want photos of the Groomsmen getting ready and of the groom’s face when he first sees me. I hope you find a photographer who suits both you and your mom’s wishes. This is where I spent the most money, because I figured that was all I would have left of the day. Everyone says it goes by so fast that you don’t really remember a whole lot. Best of luck to you! 🙂

@MrsPanda99:  haha. Worst case just get him to wipe a tear away. I love it when guys don’t have crazy faces but just wipe away a tear. It’s sweet. I’ve made jokes about bringing pepper spray to weddings and give them just a spritz haha

@Jbbee:  YES. The worst is when I hear the bride/bridesmaids talking before the ceremony about how much he’s going to cry and then he doesn’t make any sort of emotional face at all. I’m like . . . is this bride really going to want this photo? I also had a groom once who was distracted by something and was looking away in ALL of the processional shots. AGHHHH. Poor bride.

My photographer’s wife was his assistant/second. SO happy she was there. He did some amazing night time shots in which he needed an extra set of hands for the flash/meters/etc.

She also took a couple of photos which I’m so thankful for… my “first look” with Dad. Ethan was taking photos of “the boys,” and Karis got some of my favorite photos of the day of me and my Dad. But her main job was as assistant, and she definitely helped his job go smoother!

Our photographer works with an assistant, but not a second shooter. We hired a well known photographer, have seen many full wedding albums, and we’re confident there’s no need for the 2nd shooter. If you’re worried about it, look at multiple full albums of the photographer you’re considering and make sure all the shots you want are there. (That said it’s hard to imagine someone working without an assistant to help keep pace, hold lights, etc.) And having been a groomsman, I can tell you that most of “getting ready” involves eating and watching ESPN. We don’t do hair and makeup. Your photographer really only needs to be there for 10-15 minutes while the guys are putting on their ties.

Our assistant carries our gear, runs errands, making sure our needs are taken care of {Hubby & Wife Duo} so we can focus on catering t our clients, downloads/culls cards for day of slideshow. Having her there just makes my job run more smoothly and my energy level where it needs to be.

I shoot alone without an assistant/second unless its needed. Large event, location, lighting conditions, etc.

Second shooter would be an extra charge and assistant I would cover.

I tend to book weddings under 100 with ceremony and reception all in one location. Most get ready at the location as well. Having an assistant and second are just not needed most of the time.

@jdhall89:  we have both an assistant and a second photographer.
