We had 90 guests (10 of those were children) and received about $12,000 plus gifts.

Most of our guests gave us cash gifts because that’s the norm in Chinese weddings so get more than $2000 & we had almost 200 guests.

Some peoples guests were VERY generous! That’s wonderful 🙂  It is a bit of a nice reminder as I sit here stressing over our budget. I know better than to bank on receiving a certain amount of money in gifts, but it is good to know that many people’s costs were partially offset by the generosity of their friends and family!

We had about 100 guests, and got about 1300 cash, probably 1000 gift cards. Like a PP mentioned I think it’s a southern thing to not give cash gifts. I got a lot of physical gifts though. Not to mention like 15 people didn’t even bring a card, and my family (extended) isn’t too high up on the financial ladder.

My mom keeps telling me to expect to get like $10K in checks, my wedding hasn’t happened yet so we will see. We will have 130 people there, so considering $100 pp is pretty normal for a wedding gift in my region, it may very well happen!

This is a really interesting post! We are having 450-500 guests so I’m interested to see what will happen with us, lol. In our culture (West African) it is customary to actually spray the money on the couple as they are dancing throughout the night, as opposed to putting it in envelopes or cards. So Fiance and I are really interested to see what happens. I had a cousin who got 30k at her wedding with around 350 guests.

    This is BLOWING MY MIND!

I must be ignorant but why would all your guests give money? Is this a tradition? All that I’ve ever heard about is buying gifts off gift registry. (I live in the South) Is this primarily for wealthier people?

Excuse me if I sound clueless, I’m just curious.

@sweetdee522:  I think its both cultural and regional. In Toronto, most couples have registries but also can expect to receive cards with cash or cheques. That being said, in my culture (Guyanese) its pretty much standard that you give money and not have a registry.
