@sweetdee522:  I think people in the South have a tendency to give actual gifts rather than cash.

I’ve been told that I could potentially get maybe a couple hundred bucks to a thousand dollars.  I forget who said they got 52k but my jaw is still dropped.  That’s amazing.  I think in the South people tend to give more physical gifts versus cash gifts.  I dunno what to expect after reading this post.  Just looking forward to spending time with our friends and family.  <3

Not married yet, but my grandmother has already given us $10K as a wedding gift.  She gave me $10K when I finished my Ph.D. and since our engagement, has been saying that a wedding is worth as much as a Ph.D. and I tried for MONTHS to talk her out of it because that’s just INSANE in my mind, but I failed miserably.

We are in the South and I don’t expect to get any cash gifts at all partly because all our guests have to spend money to even come down (and that’s not cheap, Myrtle Beach in June!) and also because we said no gifts.

I voted for how much my sister got (500-1000).

Everyone keeps telling us they think we will get around 2k. Fiance & I find this very hard to believe. We probably have 20 ppl our of 100 that could afford to give us more than $20.

Since the beginning, we have planned as if we’ll get nothing. Because essentially it’s not really about how much $ we will get and we know 80% of our family lives paycheck to paycheck literately.

So whatever we get will be a surprise. It will all be going to pay for a loan we are about to have to take out anyway rather than blowing it or spending it some other way. We didn’t expect at all to have to get this loan so if we do get anything for the wedding, it will be nice to throw that back to the loan.

Fiance and I were talking about this at brunch this morning. Its really hard not to wonder what the total will be.  We are not “counting” on the money, infact we should be almost debt free (one student loan and car loan remaining) by July.  But its nice to daydream about being about to pay off all loans and have something in the bank!

Though I am counting on $0, its hard not to hope for more (Can’t help it, not being greedy but tell me you wouldnt like to be debt free!).

This was brought up as my brother was telling me his wifes parents sent them a “little gift” for us as they couldn’t make the wedding.  I was surprised as they are letting us use their beautiful home in alaska for our honeymoon, which is waaaay more than generous!  My bro implied the gift is a check, which is too much, but you can’t say no to them, which he found out when my bros wedding ended up costing them $500,000.  yes, half a million dollars.  it was gorgeous and amazing, beautiful and spectacular.  And on a side note, I love the 2 pairs of manolos, dress, $2000 in jewelry, trip to vegas, $500 spending money, etc I got as a bridesmaid, though I love my bro and sis more 😉  but as I don’t really know her parents, more than $100 would feel wierd. Anyway, just sitting here daydreaming and ramblin, sorry!

We had just around 250 guests and received around $27k in monetary and physical gifts from the wedding (about $1000 or less of that was physical gifts).  We were very blown away by the generosity of our guests!

We got maybe 2-3 physical gifts, but everyone else gave cash/checks, which is the norm for us.  We ended up with about $17K with about 130 guests attending, but we got money from some guests who couldn’t make it as well.

we got approximately $60 and one gift which will definitely be returned so its practically like a gift card and that was worth about $200.  only 40 people at our wedding though.

Post wedding I can now say based on our own experience! Approximately 65 guests and we received $8,000 approximately. Most came from some very generous relatives.

We had 109 and received a lot of gifts from our registry about around $5500.  A big chunk of that came from my husband’s parents & grandparents, though.

About $11k between checks, cash and gift cards; 114 people.  A big chunk of this came from one larger check.  We were honestly surprised both by people’s generosity and their… frugality.  Is that a word?  It is now.

Well, reading this thread has certainly cheared me up about the financial ramifications of living in the Northeast!  Next time I see a depressing House Hunters, I’ll think of this Laughing
