I am not military, but we did this never the less.  We had to move our wedding back a year and I needed insurance and we needed some “secondary” parent for his kids when his ex passed away and he works a really dangerous job.

My cousin, who is deployed to Afghanistan got legally wed before he left and his wife is planning their wedding now.

My brother and his wife had two weddings also, legal before Iraq and family/church when he got home.

Hi, we got married when I was planning the big wedding originally and we became pregnant.  Insurance was a necessity and we are now having the REAL wedding this October.  We had a beautiful 4 minute ceremony in Vegas (Sarcasm) so this is definitely going to be our wedding, that was just the legal part.

My husband is military and we got married before the big event. It just made sense for us. I made sure to schedule them both on the same day so that we would only have one anniversary date.

Exactly the same here. The hospital wasn’t going to let me have my FH’s name on the birth certificate! That clinched the deal for us. We did a proxy.

We didn’t, but that was because we were together prior to DH joining.  When we first talked about him joining we were dating, and I told him that if he wanted to do this we HAD to get married before he left.  He signed in January, we got married in March.

The Navy actually called him a week before our wedding to see if he would be interested in leaving the day before our wedding!  Good thing he was still in school and had a clause in his contract that they could not make him leave until the end of the semester, otherwise he would have missed the wedding!  So, we kinda got lucky there.

We will be getting married legally next time he comes home on leave, but since we won’t ever be secured a date, we’re going to the town hall/courthouse.

Once he’s done overseas (in 2013 or so?), we will be having the big “traditional” wedding with family AND friends.

Fiance is in the military and we are going to but not because of the military but because of the fact we are getting married in Mexico and I don’t want to wait the 4-6 months to get my marriage certificate and then have to shell out to legalize it in our home country.

I have been toying with the idea of marrying him when he is home for 3 weeks before he deploys rather than waiting for his return.

We got married while he was home on R&R in March, and we’re currently planning our big wedding for this November.. After everything we’d been through, it just worked for us, and we’re really happy we did it this way.. We’re still super excited for this November too, it hasn’t taken anything away from the big day..

My fiance and i have been thinking about this! he is a Marine and is coming home on leave soon, we dont know if we want to wait the 2 years before he gets out, and if we were to do this in a year when he gets back from deployment and gets stationed in North Carolina i can move with him. but were still thinking about it, were young (im almost 21 and he is 21) we are paying for it and hes not here to plan with me so a wedding before the big wedding seems kind of ideal:)

Well… the plan is no. But if the Marines decide to make things difficult with deployment, we’ll be going to the courthouse and then I’ll schedule a big wedding for after he gets back. I really don’t want to, but you gotta go what you gotta do.

Why is this so common in the military?  Yes, my hubby and I were married in an intimate ceremony last year and having a big reception and renewal of vows this upcoming Sept ๐Ÿ™‚

We did. I didn’t want to and I got pressure from the family to do it and then pressure from the family NOT to have the VR (I can’t call it a 2nd wedding) but my husband put his foot down because he felt that a lot of things at the wedding, such as my dad walking me down the aisle, his poor grandma not seeing it and other things, were a priority over the crap my family said.

    I love my soldier.
