- Wedding: November 2011
Hello! Thank you for reading this!
My fiancee and I just got engaged yesterday! We have been together 3 years, and we live together now. He is in the enlistment process with the US Navy. We have a plan to get a marriage license now, and have a wedding in about a year from now. We are doing this so he can enlist as married, and I can live on base with him, and have benefits. The paperwork to change him from single, to married takes a long time in the Navy, and he could be sent on an unaccompanied base in the meantime, and I would be left behind unless we were married.
So, this was suggested to us by my aunt, and by the recruiters, and a few sailors we’ve talked to. Basically we would get married at our local courthouse, with his best friend as our witness, and then keep it a secret. My aunt said that if we told some people and not others, it would cause a lot of problems in our family, and I agree, so we would just tell everyone that we’re still engaged. Then, we would have a ceremony with both of our families anywhere from 6 months-1 year later.
I see the sense in it, but I am uneasy about it, because I am worried about people finding out, and planning a wedding to a Navy Sailor. I know it’s hard to plan weddings to military men, and his schedule may change. I need some advice, and I was hoping there were other women out there that have done this, or have some advice for me!
Thank you in advance! Rose
