sarathemermaid :  make sure you get all the conversion pieces now!! My friend forgot to and by the time her second came along it was discontinued and she couldn’t even find used parts anywhere.

Seriously though the hakaa is the best $10 a new mom can spend – you’ll be glad you got it! My husband called it the “titty grenade” hahhaa. Also register for some nursing bras!

LilliV :  my kid thrashes so hard that the zipper is hard but we don’t have inverted ones yet! My opinion might change with an inverted zipper. Cloth diaper with a charcoal insert has been amazing. He leaked through disposables but these have been solid!

sarathemermaid :  My son is almost 4 months old, and a friend asked me for a similar list recently, so this is what I’ve come up with (for the first three months of life, at least):

If you’re planning to breastfeed:

– My Breast Friend nursing pillow (the Boppy isn’t as good, and this thing is gold for tiny little babies and first time moms who don’t know what they’re doing)

– A Haakaa pump (just trust me)

– A good breast pump, yes, but also the Medela Manual/Hand pump (especially important once your baby starts sleeping through the night and you wake up engorged)

– Medela nipple shields (just have a few on hand – hopefully you won’t need them, but breastfeeding HURTS at the beginning, and these make it bearable)

Other Must Haves:

– As many others have said, ZIP UP footie pajamas

–  A couple of good swaddles. We liked the Happiest Baby swaddle and the Love to Dream swaddle.

– Magic Merlin suit (for when the baby gets a little bigger)

– A good baby monitor (we have Infant Optics and like it)

– A play mat (I didn’t register for one, but someone got me the Baby Einstein one. I don’t love it, but my son does! If I could go back, I’d register for the Lovevery play gym)

– Bibs pacifiers

– Angelcare Bath Support

– Zutano baby booties (the only socks that stay on!)

– Parker Baby Bandana Drool Bibs

– We have the UppaBaby Vista stroller and Mesa car seat and love both!

– A good sound machine (we have the Hatch and really like it)

– A changing pad that doesn’t require a cover (we got a cheap one and all of these cute covers. HA. That lasted like three days. Save yourself the laundry.)

– So many burp cloths and muslin blankets

Things we registered for and don’t use/like/need:

– DockATot (Everyone I know loves it, my baby hates it 🤷🏻‍♀️)

– MamaRoo swing

– 4Moms Pack and Play (You’ll definitely want a pack and play, just don’t get this one)

– ErgoBaby360 carrier (I don’t love it, but don’t have a better option for you! Currently looking for one I like better!)

My must haves:  Fisher price side to side swing, wipeable changing pads so you don’t have to change them 5x a day, Diono car seat in case you want 3 kids these fit 3 across in a car, GLASS bottles (something about putting plastic bottles in a hot dish washer every night just doesn’t seem like a good idea to me), Graco click connect

Waste: any type of pillow never used them, pacifiers, mittens, swaddles

Must haves: zippy Pjs but best if its a double zip so you can just zip their legs out (e.g. Bonds zippys), love to dream swaddles, foot piano play mat thing with dangle toys (Sorry, best description I can think of!), lots of little thin washcloths – better than disposable wipes in lots of situations and to protect you from being peed on.

If you can swing it, a bassinet/Moses basket that rocks was awesome. We also love our Uppababy Vista pram and stokke Tripp Trapp high chair, but they aren’t a must have.

Waste of money: baby swing, pacifiers, mittens, newborn ‘clothes’.

sarathemermaid :  oooh I agree with the piano play mat. My little guy was obsessed with that for months!! Great for building hand and foot coordination, tummy time, etc.

Great advice above…def agree with putting some “big ticket” items like crib, stroller, car seat, swing etc on there in case people want to pitch in.

Things that i was told are “must have’s” but proved not to be too critical for me were the Ubbi diaper pail (I mean it’s fine but not worth the price tag…the shit still stinks in there once your baby start solids, so I haven’t found it to be all that amazing), and the Keekaroo changing pad. I know people swear by it cause you can just wipe it down. But idk, in the first few months when your baby is shitting and peeing all over the place nonstop, you’re doing laundry every day anyway, so I don’t think having to wash the cover of a traditional pad that gets poop and pee on it is such a burden.

I found that there were a lot of registry items that you just won’t know if you’ll actually need or not until your baby arrives. Or maybe you know you’ll need something in that general category of items, but there are 500 product options and you just won’t know which one would work best until you’re actually in the thick of it with a newborn.

Examples: pacifiers, bottles, breastfeeding/pumping accessories, bottle warmer, swaddle (there are sooo many types and babies can be so effin picky), butt paste, etc.

So my advice is to get Amazon prime if you don’t have it and maybe also get the Amazon Prime credit card for 5% cashback on all Amazon purchases. I’m ont even joking lol. The amount of shit I ordered at 3am on Amazon in the first couple months of my child’s life was pretty staggering.

I feel like I didn’t register for anything I ended up needing (not entirely true), but could have done better.

– Lille baby carrier and solly wrap were fantastic. I also got the nesting pillow which was a great breastfeeding pillow and ended up being great for tummy time too. We LOVED our baby Bjorn bouncer. I just put it in storage and my little one is 21 months and was still using it, but was way to big for it.

Things I didn’t register for that I should have:

playgym (loveevery is worth every penny, that thing is awesome).

An on the go changing station. skip hop one is great

stuff for baby starting solids: dishes, cutlery, pocket bibs, sippy cups

baby bathtub.

woolino sleep sack(s)

white noise machine

baby first aid kit that includes infant Tylenol, Motrin, syringes for the tylenol/motrin, aquaphor, thermometer, Pedialyte, nose sucker, infant vitamin D drops.

Don’t register for blankets or clothes or books. You’ll get tons. Do register for a few toys, especially if you are particular about them. we don’t like anything battery powered/flashing lights so it was nice to have a few options on our registry.
