Hey everyone, I just recently got engaged but due to me being in college for another year we have decided not to get married until late 2013 or early 2014. I want to start planning but i’m not sure where to start!? Thanks!

The absolute first step is to determine a budget. I strongly discourage from even opening a bridal magazine until you have a rough budget set. And then start gathering a guest list so you can estimate how many people might fit in to said budget. once you have those two things ironed out it will all start falling in to place. budget first… absolutely first

I would say Budget and Rough idea of Guestlist size. Happy engagement to you!

I agree w/ PP – start looking at budget and guestlist. Then, with those 2 in mind, you can start thinking about venues and set a date and take it from there!

“Now what?” NOW you post pictures of the ring, silly! 😉

firstly congratulations! secondly, i’m in the EXACT same boat as you. i have one more year of my masters degree, and will be long distance with fiance until summer 2013, pretty much around the same time as you!
obviously i don’t have much advice, but thought i’d say hi and you’re not alone 🙂
i’m not planning anything right now… just talking about it with him and looking at pretty wedding pictures for ideas 🙂

I would tell everyone, take pictures, stare at your ring, open a bottle and share it with your girly mates, talk budgets and just enjoy the time you have.

Celebrate! Haha, that’s the best part!
But I agree with PPs, figure out a guest list/budget/date….or if you have any non-negotiables (aka the ceremony must be in THIS church, or I must have THIS photographer – that will help you pick a date). As far as a budget goes, see if your parents (or his) are planning on contributing anything, and figure out how much you can afford to save each month. Fiance and I don’t have a set budget (like, 1k for this, 3k for that), but more of an overall idea of where we want to end up at, money wise. I highly recommend reading the book A Practical Wedding!
ETA: Fiance and I are planning on a June 2014 wedding – giving us exactly 24 months to plan. So far, I’m loving it, but people will give you a side eye and ask why you’ve got such a long engagement. Just be prepared 🙂

Glad to know I’m not alone! Lol and yes I’ve already been asked why I am having a 2 year engagement… Thanks everyone!

My best piece of advice is to make your own wedding planning binder. I made mine instead of buying one and it’s helped me out so much. It gives your a place to keep everything wedding related in one spot.

Try to enjoy the moment, don’t do anything too quickly (like don’t ask ppl to be in bridal party yet – you may regret it). Think of the type of ceremony you’d like (destination, courthouse, elopement, big wedding, small wedding, etc.), and set a budget. Start saving.

The wedding binder is a wonderful idea! I will have to do that!
