yourhandinmine :  It sounds kinda normal to me. I got infected from a wisdom tooth removal and developed a high fever THAT DAY. You’re a few days out already and the pain and throbbing is part of the healing process. You’ve been doing all kinds of bleeding, taking medications, not really drinking water much, and brushing extremely gingerly (and sparingly)…you’re breath will get itself in order. Believe this, if you had a DRY SOCKET, you wouldn’t be typing. You’d be hunting around the house for something to beat the dentist about the head (or yourself). It really and truly hurts THAT badly. I was walking through the house aching and I karate kicked a lamp off the coffee table. I had mine out on a Friday and on Sunday I was calling the dentist’s emergency number and I made him come out of CHURCH to call in something for me. It helped SOME but not enough and on Monday I went in and they put some little plugs in that were soaked with clove oil and it took the pain away instantly. I know it doesn’t feel like it but it sounds like you’re on the mend. Call them in the morning to follow up and put your mind at ease. Feel better! They don’t grow back so it’s all over!

Yeah it sounds normal to me…. but if you’re worried call your oral surgeon. Please take my earlier advice and stop Googling everything! That’s all I was doing a month ago and there’s soooo much conflicting advice online. Your doc is gonna be the best person for you to consult. You def do NOT have dry socket- the pain would be unbearable and it wouldn’t go away, even with the pain meds. If you’ve been having a bit of throbbing but overall feeling ok today that is pretty normal. I had a really awful headache on day 3 and quickly discovered it was from not eating and drinking enough. No matter how hard it is you need to start eating. Even if someone buys you those nasty Ensure protein drinks it is better than nothing. The only reason I missed an extra day of work was because I wasn’t eating and drinking enough. Also, in regards to the taste in your mouth. I developed a metallic -y taste in my mouth a few days after my surgery. It was gross and I too was very worried about possible infection… I was fine. It went away after a few days.

yourhandinmine :  I just saw your update.. I remember having bad breath with my dry socket, but my surgeon told me that was not from my dry socket, that it was completely normal and not an indication of a dry socket. I also did nothing that could have caused my dry socket – I followed all post op instructions.. so if you have one, please don’t feel like you did something wrong.

Yes, you are correct about what they do to treat a dry socket….only mine was not gauze, but more of a medicated substance that looks like chewing tobacco and tasted like cloves. IF it ends up being that you have one, demand that they numb you before hand. They told me I could not be numbed before mine, but I’ve heard several people say they were numbed for treatment of a dry socket. I’m not trying to freak you out, but I wish I had known it was possible for them to numb me! The dry socket pain is also temporary – mine felt so much better about 20 mins after having the sockets packed.

I’d be slightly annoyed that your surgeon didn’t find a way to see you today, given how much pain you are in. As soon as I called my surgeon, he told me to head to his office immediately and he rescheduled an appointment he had that afternoon because he knew what I was dealing with. I hope you start feeling better quickly!

yourhandinmine :    Thank you for the update, I have been worried about you.  The pain you are having seems over the top to me.   I am relieved you will be seen by the surgeon tomorrow.  Best of luck, and you will be in my prayers.

I think it’s good you’re getting checked if you’re concerned. It sounds like it could be normal to me, but there’s no reason not to have them look in there. My dry socket was unbelievably painful. I was hysterically, inconsolably sobbing nonstop despite the pain meds. To be honest, the treatment was stupidly painful too, but I felt better within minutes of having the clove oil done. So at least if it IS dry socket, it gets better quickly. (Though when they did treat the dry socket, one of the nurses told me it was more painful than childbirth. Let me just say now having done both, childbirth wins, haha.)

yourhandinmine :  I had dry socket and my recollection was by the time they cut it open, I was in so much pain I didn’t care. They pack it and almost immediately you feel relief.

point being, if you have it, it’s possible you’ve already been through the worst of it. Fingers crossed. But hey, if you can get numbed per PP, go with that!

If the pain meds are still working for you it’s likely not a dry socket. I was told by my surgeon that the pain meds they give you do NOT help to relieve dry socket pain. Maybe it’s just taking a bit slower for you to heal? Regardless I think you should see the doctor to help ease your mind, and maybe they can give you something else for the pain. But I was told that dry socket pain is 100% unbearable and the pain meds do nothing to alleviate it.

yourhandinmine :  awesome news! I just pulled up your thread to ask you how you were feeling. Few days and you will be right as rain. It’s a sucky surgery but now that it’s done, you won’t have to be bothered with them again ever. Glad you’re on the mend!
