So, I was in a car accident late February. It wasn’t a bad one, just a fender bender due to the ice on the road. It was my first accident so I was a reck, crying and having a mild panic attack. Luckily, the police officer was very kind and very reassuring that everything was going to be okay. Of course all was well. No one was injured. And I had insurance. Or so I thought… My husband called our insurance company to fill them in and they told him we had been dropped, due to the fact that we hadn’t payed our most recent bill. He proceeded to tell them that we hadn’t gotten a bill to pay. Our payments were set up in 6 month incraments, so it was kind of easy to lose track of time on our end. They read off the address that they had on record for our personal account. They had been leaving off our apartment number, so any mail they would have sent to us was un-mailable and we wouldn’t receive it. He told them that was the wrong address, and silence on the other end! The immediately saw their wrong doing and started another policy for us. a more expensive one. Yippie!
About a week after the accident I was sent a “request of financial responsibility” from the BMV. And if I couldn’t provide validation of insurance during the accident, I would lose my license. The best part is, my deadline is April 7th. The one year anniversary of my husband and my marriage.
this whole situation just annoys me. It was my first accident and it was a situation that I couldn’t control. Then we find out that our insurance dropped us. Didn’t even try to contact us through the phone (they had our correct address on file because my husband’s business insurance is through the same company). And then I’m going to lose my license for 3 months for a first time offense that I didn’t even know was happening! If I had knowingly been driving without insurance, that would have been one thing. But I had no idea! I guess I get a driver everywhere I go for 3 months now. Ugh!
