Just out of curiosity… what is the go with engagement photos?
Ive never really heard of them untill coming on the bee. Is it like a test out of your photographer for the day? an extension of the engagement announcement? because you can? or is it an american thing. Is it absolutely neccessary to do… like the done thing in planning weddings?
Are they expensive? Did you pay for them yourselves or were they gifted? are they supposed to be formal or casual?
Please share your thoughts on them.. if you had or are doing engagement photos, explain why and if not.. why?
Im just really curious..

Yes we did but only because they were included in our wedding package and opting out did not result in any kind of discount.

we did, a friend who is a new photographer did them and they were $150. We did them because we’ve been together more than 8 years and there are no decent pictures of us, they’re mostly selfies and we’re usually making silly faces. FH’s mom (and mine) wanted nice pictures.
We will probably end up with another set as we’re going to have a different photographer for our wedding and most wedding packages include them. It lets you get a feeling for the photographer and lets you feel out each other’s style & personality.

Yes, we had engagement photos done. Why? We wanted nice, professional photos of ourselves taken. We didn’t have anything like it, and I didn’t mind having some where we weren’t in wedding attire.
Ours were included with our photographer at no charge.

@wifey2be: we did because:
1) they were included in the package.
2) we were able to make sure we liked the photographer
3) we got more comfortable with having our pictures taken
4) we got to have photos of ourselves in non-wedding attire
5) our moms. moms love photos.
6) we got pictures of our dogs!
7) we got photos to include on the wedding website/save-the-date
8) i got to test out hair and makeup. i don’t wear much in everyday life and it’s said you need to wear quite a bit for photos. i was really happy with how my makeup turned out and i realized i wanted to grow my hair out more from the engagement photos before the wedding.
9) vanity – we’re not going to be this young, wrinkle-free and skinny forever. might as well document it now in order to cry over later. 😉

With the photographer we booked for our wedding, it wasn’t much more money to have them done. We were also told by family it was a good way to get familiar with the idea of being posed and to get comfortable with so many photos being taken.

We did..mostly because it was my way of having an excuse for us to get photos done. We hadn’t had any professional photos together until then. Many couples here in Canada have them done.
We wore causal clothes.
I used a completely different photographer for our engagement photos than our wedding. We paid like, $100. I used quite a few of them at our ceremony for decor around our venue.
I’m really glad we had them done.

we’re doing ours next week. Why? Bc I want them. lol. The only “professional” photos I have of me (and I call them that very loosely) are my school and graduation photos. I’d like nice photos of Fiance and I that are seperate from our wedding photos.
I want to make an album of them, and hang the nicest few around our house. We’ll only be young and look like this once… shortly after we’re married we’ll likely have kids, so why not get nice photos now before all that?
It’s definitely a new trend, but it’s fun, and nice to have. And it gives us a chance to get to work with and know our photographer a bit better, and get used to being in front of the camera. Also, good excuse for a make up trial

no b/c although it probably would’ve been good to get to know our photographer beforehand, the photography package already cost a fortune and not doing engagement photos made it a little cheaper. also, i just felt a little awkward about it(?), but i can’t really explain why exactly.
ETA: in the end, not meeting our photographer beforehand turned out fine & i love our photos

We did, and are so glad we did. It was mostly to test out our photographer and get used to working with him, and to make sure we liked his pictures before it’s too late. Luckily, we loved them and we loved him!

We had engagement photos done so that were professional pictures of us and we could celebrate the engagement in a(nother) way. We had a lot of fun and the photography studio we went to was great.
Our favorites out of our engagement photos:

We asked a friend to do them, and she did a beautiful job. We have a lot of pictures of us doing stuff and making funny faces, but we don’t have a lot of nice pictures where our hair looks nice and we’re smiling and stuff. We figured we’re only going to look this young once 🙂

It was included in our wedding package, it was great to meet them before the wedding and try out their style/see the kind of photos we really liked. We have some beautiful images from that 1 hour shoot– and in hindsight, even if it had cost $500 all over again, I would have done it!

We did, yes. We got them done because a friend of ours is setting up a photography business and offered to do them for free! Yay! It’s turned out great though as I have used the photos for a photo guest book and for the back cover of our program.

My mom is actually going to take our engagment photos. She used to be a professional photographer (still photographs like crazy, just doesn’t get paid for it). She used to do weddings, and is actually starting up again (doing a small wedding this weekend actually).
This is a nice way for us to get some professional quality photos of us (although I guess my mom takes them all the time lol). We’ll probably use one for our Save the Date.
For us, this will be free. We would only have to pay for the cost of printing the photos (which is pretty cheap), but I have a feeling my mom will gift us the printouts and possibly a framed picture of our choice.
She’s going to come to Boston for a day and we’ll take pictures around the city–should be a fun time 🙂
