I always feel intimidated by craigslist. I’m happy that some of the bees were able to direct you to finding an awesome photographer! It has to feel great getting that step done. I’m sure you will have plenty of great photographs for recaps. : )

hmmmm…. craigslist. Interesting.

I’m getting antsy now that we don’t have a pro photog for our wedding day. I asked my Brother and my Dad to take photos. they both have great cameras (high quality, $$$) and take great shots. but I’m concerned that because they are close to me, they will be more “wrapped up” in the ceremony and what else rather than being a detached witness and looking for great photo ops!

trouble is, now the cheapest I can find is $500 and up! is it worth it to get someone else in for at least a few hours to make sure it’s all covered? i remember reading here from another bride that said the wedding only lasts one day, but you are left with the photos for the rest of your life. so I want them to be great!

@mtnhoney:  A great camera does not make for a great photographer, and even a great photographer may not always shine as a wedding photographer.  If photography is truly a priority for your wedding, hire a dedicated professional whose only job is to be there documenting your day.  You have just cause to be concerned by just having family members take photos.

Craigslist is generally not where experienced professionals go to advertise themselves.  It’s generally the wild west out there, and while you might get lucky, the emphasis is on might.  Most talented photographers are going to start bare minimum at $2000 and up.  Whether it’s worth it to you is up to you.

As a photographer I’d definitely agree with the OP that photography is worth it.  But unless there is no other option, Craigslist would be my last recommendation for finding a photographer.

@continuumphotography:  thanks for voicing my concerns! trouble is, we really don’t have an extra $2000!!! we are both just graduating from college/university programs, after going back to school in our early 30’s, and as it is we are going to be having a fabulous wedding that we can afford, without any debt, really.

if we hired a pro at that kind of pricing, it would be on credit.

i found a local photograher that we CAN afford, and while some of her engagement and baby belly portraits are fabulous, her wedding photography on her site is just, boring.

i’m going to have to discuss this all with my sweetie. I’m so glad our wedding is on a Weds eve, because I’m sure that at four months out for a summer wedding, not having someone booked by now, we’d be SOL.

@continuumphotography:  She wasnt asking for your professional opinion of Craigslist. It is a wonderful resource and when researched properly, one can find great things. Not everyone can afford “professional” rates and this topic has been beat to death.

OP, Congrats on your find. We are playing this game now, only we are trying to find one who will shoot a Destination Wedding cruise wedding i the middle of January.

@Mrs.Darling:  It’s a forum, the whole point of it is to offer insight and opinions.  If one person can be positively influenced by my experience and not follow the same path that I did, I’ll be happy.  I was in her exact same boat when I got married and I didn’t think I could afford a professional photographer either, but we spent a lot of money on stuff that in hindsight was definitely not important.  Even if I had to put it on credit, if I had the opportunity to go back and change that one thing about our wedding I gladly would.
