I do have an engagement ring, but before he surprised me with it, we were going to go with just wedding bands.  It was originally a financial and ethical decision (we’re on the same page as 2dbride–“our not wanting to have to worry about flashy rings in high crime areas to wanting to avoid contributing to the “everyone must have a diamond ring” culture that makes conflict diamonds economically worthwhile”) but I also liked the notion of having just one ring to represent our relationship. I liked the simplicity of it.

One thing that you should realize and be prepared for is the fact that others will be surprised/disappointed/disapproving/confused and any number of other things as to why you don’t have a ring–you’ll get “where’s the ring?” a lot. It’s not that big a deal and it’ll only last for a few months, but just be prepared that people may have that kind of reaction.

there is no rule saying you have to have a diamond or engagement ring.  Do whatever you want!!!  If you want a plain gold band that’s fine!  If you want a cool detailed colored jemstone ring go for it!!  If you want a necklace go for it!!

I have an ering, but it’s really old and sentimental-valuey, so I might stop wearing it once I have a wedding band. Whatever you decide, I think it’s awesome that you’re actively considering what’s best for you and your Boyfriend or Best Friend instead of just going with an ering because everybody does it.
