i can’t imagine how the nurse fell for this. the transcript of this call is positively ridiculous – from the accents to the talk of walking the corgis. but it is a mean-spirited prank.

@ladyartichoke:  AWWW they are so cute together! and she does look so pretty in this photo. Its one of my favorite photos of her by far.

And about the prank, 1, the nurse should not have been that naive, and 2, I hope that this radio station is fined, shut down, or something like that. thats just not right.

it’s bad enough that her pregnancy was announced before the end of the first trimester, now this? I’m not listening to it. Disgusting.

I kind of side with the radio hosts, it was an obvious prank.  Still though, they shouldn’t be wasting the hospital staff’s time, and they shouldn’t have aired the information the nurse did give out.  Better a prank than a stalker or someone being given info.

Wow… at first I thought people shouldn’t blame the nurse, but then I listened to it… and yeah, it’s pretty ridiculous. “Oh I just have to feed my corgis” really? LOL not at the situation but that it was so obviously fake and yet still fallen for.

As a person who works in healthcare as a nurse I make people who call in to schedule/resched their own appts and family members appts jump through hoops.  I basically ask for anything and everything that can identify they are who they are without asking for their social security number (which I also have access to so I could if I wanted to be a witch lol).  I can get in HUGE trouble for disclosing information (even accidentally) to anyone other than the patient without prior consent from the patient.  So if a patients son or daughter calls and says I need to schedule or resched my mom for an appt I ask tons of information to either confirm that the patient is near them but unable to make their own appt or that they are who they say they are.

As for disclosing information regarding hospital stays, test results etc patients are told to come up with a “password” that they have shared with only close family who are able to be told this information.  When a person calls and says “I’m so-in-so’s daughter and I’d like to know her test results.” I ask for the “password” my patient gave to me, if the person on the phone can’t tell me the “password” I don’t disclose info. Simple as that.  It’s for the protection of my patient, their rights as a patient and my job as a nurse.  I’m sorry but I didn’t spend $10,000 on a nursing license to have it taken away over a “prank”.

Thought Prince Charles’s response was really funny.  From the Daily Mail: “[Prince Charles] alluded to a prank call to the hospital by two Australian DJs that duped a nurse into revealing details about Kate’s health, joking to reporters: ‘How do you know I’m not a radio station?'”

That poor nurse has killed herself. So sad. That poor woman, yes she shouldn’t have given the information that she did but the mistake was not worth taking her life for. As a relative of a nurse this makes me really sad. They are under so much pressure to not fuck up. The fact that her mistake was broadcast is just awful.

@NurseMandie:  It’s interesting…the hospital cheif said while the nurse may have revealed patient information, she did not reveal anything that isn’t already public domain. I too work in health care and am gearing up for nursing school so I do understand and use the same protocols as you do when talking to patients. The nurse, however, stated ‘information’ such as “she’s sleeping now” and “she needs rest, she had a busy night”. So, she didn’t actually reveal any lab info, med info, discharge info, etc…which makes it slightly better. She was surely caught off gaurd and assumed that the first safety net had been checked. I highly doubt the call came directly to her, it had to go through other avenues first. I just feel bad for all of them and now the hospital systems over there are probably going to go to great lengths to ensure they have an iron wall from here on out. The radio station played with fire and now they look like idiots.

@JoolyBee:  That’s weird that they would consider “She’s sleeping, she’s had a busy day” public domain.  To me that’s still patient information that is not public business.  But different countries have different rules so I guess what seems like a HIPPA violation to me may not be to them.
