(Closed) Keeping My Name but Adding FI’s Last Name… How does that work?

I just added his last name to the end of my last name without a hyphen.  So I have first, middle, maiden, married.  Let’s just say it’s a gigantic pain in the ass and it’s only been 3 months.  I should have moved my maiden to my middle name.  I feel this way most because my name doesn’t completely fit on my credit cards, my social security card has 2 lines, my professional licenses have 2 lines (and signing my name every five minutes takes about 5 minutes), and I flew the other day and realized that not only does my first name not fit on a plane ticket, but half of my maiden name doesn’t either.  All those things are really inconsequential– who cares if it’s two lines or doesn’t fit one 1 line, etc.  But it’s just annoying.  That being said, I wasn’t ready to give up my maiden name when I filled out my marriage license.  I’m moving towards being more ready and will probably have it legally changed to move my maiden name to middle name (having two middle names). Only you can decide what’s right for you.  You can do anything you want– even become Princess Consuela Banana Hammack (per Friends).  ๐Ÿ™‚

I plan on keeping my whole name so after marriage it would be Amanda M******* R*** T****.

I wanted to do this but I couldn’t figure out the way to do it easily or how that would work with official forms and whatnot. So, I just dropped my middle. So now my maiden name is my middle name. I just had to tell the people at the social security office what I wanted. They gave me a hard time about it, but they did it.

This might be a little different in your situation because you go by your middle name, but I’m planning on moving my maiden name to a second middle name (I have friends who have done this as well, so I can attest to the fact that they let you do it, haha). So my name will legally be “(First) (Middle Maiden) (Last)”. If that makes sense. It makes it a little easier to deal with the legal mumbo-jumbo that longdistanceco_ca was talking about.

@MrsB-to-Be:  Your situation is mine exactly!  I go by my middle name and added my husband’s last name.  Initially I wanted to drop my first name because it’s already confusing enough having to explain to everyone that I go by my middle name.  But then I learned that I would have to get a court order to drop my first name, because it is my “primary” name.  Ugh!

Anyway, now I just have 2 middle names.  My name is, for example, Mary Jane Smith Jones.  I go by Jane.  When filling out forms where I have to put a middle initial but there is only room for one, I put Mary J. Jones.

This irritates me a little because I was so adamant on keeping my maiden name, but it gets left out every time I have to write my name on a legal document.

Socially I go by Jane Smith Jones.

ETA:  I’m also a Mrs. B.  lol

I should also note that I plan on actually using both my maiden name and last name professionally (like a hyphenation but without the hyphen, like longdistanceco_ca has now), but technically making my maiden name a second middle name to avoid the legal confusion. If that makes any sense at all.

I’m thinking I would just have two middle names. People do that all the time. So when I ever sign anything it would be Amanda T****. My actual middle name and my maiden name would be like having two middle names.

I don’t want to drop my middle name because it is for one of my mom’s dear friends that died before I was born. And I don’t want to drop my last name because I’m the only child, my parents are divorced, and there won’t be another one.
