I’m a bit frustrated with my family. When they talk about “keeping up with the Joneses,” they usually mean my Darling Husband and me. We’re not rich, but I make a fair amount of money in the Navy. We don’t spend haphazardly, but we get great deals on things through our freecycle group or craigslist, or ebay. We live modestly, but we have really nice stuff. I was fortunate enough to be able to foot the bill for the entire wedding, and I made it a lavish affair. Somehow I feel like my two older brothers are always trying to keep pace with me, even though they aren’t in a position financially to do so. It’s frustrating to see them act irresponsibly with their money, and I feel bad saying something since I could have afforded to do [whatever] in the first place. How do you guys deal with family that is trying to keep pace with you?

We’re still young, and so our income is from part-time jobs while we go to school, but Future Brother-In-Law & Future Sister-In-Law, who are both graduated but haven’t had luck finding good jobs, seem to think we’re snobby. This is mainly because we live in the city (where we go to school) where apartment buildings are sometimes named, and we tend to buy clothes and shoes off of Ebay rather than buying from Payless, etc like they do. We always get comments like, “well my dress isn’t nice like Lilyfaith’s, but…” when half the time my dress is used and $20-$30.
I honestly don’t know how to deal with it other than to shrug it off and clarify that, yes, we do have to watch our money. We don’t eat out, we don’t have cable, we don’t even have a TV except for their old one from their college days. But somehow, because we live in a building with a “snobby name” we’re the snooty ones. Grr..
