(Closed) Kettlebells?

I just picked up the Jillian Michaels’ “Shred it with Weights” dvd, which is a kettlebell workout. I got the 10lb Bob Harper kettlebell from Target for about $35 and it came with another kettlebell dvd. I’ve only done level 1 of Jillian’s dvd, but I really liked it. I also got a 15lb kettle bell from a discount store near me for about $22, which my husband will use when I finally get him to work out with me! 🙂

My trainer has me working out with kettlebells.  I think it’s a great part of my workout routine (it sucks because it’s hard but hey, it works).  I would say use the heaviest you can lift and control in a swing but you still want it heavy enough that you reap the benefits.

There are whole workouts designed around them or they can be incorporated into a workout- either way I like them because it is a dynamic functional workout where you use a lot of muscles, not just concentrating on one muscle as you do in a circuit machine workout.

I used kettle bells a few times with a personal trainer and REALLY liked them.

However, a word of caution.

I have a weak lower back and suffer from sciatica. After one intense workout (where I didn’t do anything wrong position wise or tweak anything), I had severe lower back pain and sciatica for a week from all the motion and pressure it put on my lower back.

So if you have a weak back, I’d recommend starting slow.

I would say if you’ve never used kettlebells, it may be best to catch a class so the instructor can correct your form and show you the right way to use them.  Amazing workout!

I also bought Jillian’s kettlebell DVD and a 10 lb kb.  I love doing the dvd-it seems to be a great workout!  My pants are looser just after 2 days 🙂  But evidently Jillian’s form is really bad in her DVD if you don’t know what you’re doing; on youtube there is page after page of responses on her form and she is seriously getting slammed!!  I’ve been researching proper form from other kb instructors on youtube so I won’t hurt myself.  I think I will get a 15 lb bell this weekend and use it for swings.
