I didn’t honeymoon in KW but I’ve lived there! Anything specific you’re wanting to know?!

I’ve booked Key West for my honeymoon and I have some questions too. 🙂

What are the best restaurants? I’ve heard rave reviews about a dessert place called Better Than Sex.

What would you say the nicest hotel is?

I’m also looking to do my honeymoon in key west around November.  Any recommendations on things to do?

We went to Key West on our (2 1/2 years late) honeymoon last June.  We stayed at The Southernmost House.  It was expensive, but totally worth it.  When we weren’t out doing touristy stuff, we were hanging out by the pool.

Our favorite restaurant was Blue Heaven, but we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Cafe Marquesa.  Going to Better Than Sex is a must if you visit Key West.

SelfieSlob:  I am having my wedding there and have been there a couple times.

A couple places we love, Half Shell Raw Bar, New York Pasta Garden, Blue Heaven for breakfast, Turtle Kraals. We did the conch train when we have gone in the past and of course walked/shopped on duval street

New york pasta garden is where we are having the dinner after our wedding. The outside area is so pretty at night, they have lights wrapped around the trees in like a garden setting

SelfieSlob:  Haven’t honeymooned there but have visited several times. We always stay at Southernmost on the Beach, which has in my opinion the nicest beach on the island out of the major hotels (which isn’t saying much, Key West isn’t exactly known for its huge beaches…), the nicest rooms, and is in a quiet area while still in walking distance to all of Duvall St. But it is pricey.

You absolutely need to do Better Than Sex. We also love Pisces and Santiago’s Bodega, but you really could spend weeks eating the food there before you run into something bad. If you’re a fan of Paella, I really recommend El Siboney. Just dont’ be afraid to wander off of Duvall Street. Oh and have tons of fun!

hollysmith92:  I’ve been to Key West for a bachelorette getaway and it was so much fun! I am not sure I would go for a honeymoon- but it could also be the pretense of the trip I was on. It didnt seem very romantic and there are a lot of partiers there (and no beaches- just a manmade one)

hollysmith92:  We spent a few nights there as part of our honeymoon. We stayed at the Orchid Key Inn while there. Our favorite activity was a full day sail on Danger Charters which the hotel helped us arrange. Visiting Ernest Hemingway’s house was cool (even more so if you like cats and cat pee smell). We had as much Cuban food as we could handle (we had a nice walk to and a great meal at El Siboney restaurant). One day for lunch we made reservations to have lunch and take the ferry over to Sunset Key which is right nearby. It was a nice place to grab a bite of good food.

ETA: We went in late September. It was beautiful but HOT.

LilRhodyGem:  I’ve been there during June and December.  It was 85 degrees two days before Christmas.  I have my suspicions that it’s always hot there.

strawbabies:  I went once in early December and it was 60’s and rainy. Miserable. This time was much nicer, even if we have to “hydrate” more often. For shame, I know.

Didn’t honeymoon down there. But we went to the Florida Keys for our one tear anniversary. We were at Key West for one day. It was definitely gorgeous there, but I wouldn’t honeymoon exclusively on that island. Too many tourists. We stayed on Marathon and went to a different island each day. Bahia Honda was my personal favorite.

LOTS OF SUGGESTIONS 🙂 Sorry it’s a long post!

I totally miss the Island and can’t  wait to visit in June for engagment photos with my fiancé!

Places to stay: I hate to say this but its pricey no matter where you stay! They have some new chain hotels going up in “new town” as soon as you turn onto Roosevelt off US1 that may be the most cost effestive but not very convenient for all the fun! I highly suggest staying in old town of you can swing it!

Hotels in Front Street – will be pricey but great location (The Peir house, the Westin, and the Hyatt)

Southernmost Hotel – Is very nice! And they have their own beach (beaches are few and far between in KW! and this is a nice one!)

The Gardens Hotel – a very nice boutique hotel just a block from duval. It’s a great central location but still pricey.

The Crown Plaza is smack dab in the middle of party central .. Duval! it’s also one of the most “haunted” buildings in KW!

You also have The Reach and Casa Marina .. Both fancy and beautiful resorts.

Lastly, take a look at B&Bs and houses on home away! If I was visiting. I’d want to experience what locals do …. So many beautiful historic homes have been converted to vacation homes and B&b. It’s the true KW experience!

PLACES TO EAT! Too many to mention! KW is the home of so many good restaurants! Many already mentioned above (blue heaven, el siboney, better than sex, raw bar, sunset key…) below are a few more of my favorites …

Santiago Bodega – tapas restaurant (and where my fiancé took me before he Proposed)

Paseo Restaurant is a MUST!! Its a small little Togo place with very little outside seating. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesday’s (I think). Its a fusion between Caribbean and Cuban food … Corn on the cob is their signature and everything Ive had there is to die for. Be pepared to wait But its well worth it (you can call your order in ahead of time which I highly suggest.)

Best lobster roll is a toss up between DJs Clam Shack and Eaton Street Seafood Market.

Sandy’s is a local favorite for Cuban food! They accept cash only and are also a laundry Matt! Great Cubans and great Cuban coffee!

happy hour alonsos! From 4-7 half off drinks and apps! Great food and great deal!

Kojin Noodle Bar was my go to! it was a serious addiction problem!

Okay, I could go on forever about the food, I’m not even kidding! If you need more suggestions I’ll list away! LOL

THINGS TO DO!

Beaches … Are far and few between! If your looking for the island getaway where you sit on a beach and sip piña coladas key West is not the destination for you! But my favorite beach spots are the southernmost beach and Fort Zach! I’m a little biased for Fort Zach … It’s where my fiance proposed! Be warned, there are rocks when you walk in the water!

Sunset …

Mallory Square is a great place to be entertained while watching the sunset. But it’s not the place to actually enjoy the beauty of it unless you want pictures of peoples heads in your photos! Def pick one night to experience the live street performers.

The best ways to experience Sunset … Sunset sail (so many companies and private charters to choose from), Fort Zach is hands down my favorite sunset location! There are rocks at the end of the park .. Pick a rock and watch the sunset with beautiful sailboat in the backround!

EXCURSIONS: The best way the experience Key West and the water is by going out on a BOAT! Sabago has good full day excursions!

Check out Captain Alex who does a very Nice dinner cruise at sunset. He used to date my aunt and I know he gets tons a great reviews .. My aunt wouldn’t be thrilled I’m promoting but it’s a true KW experience and he is a true “fresh water conch” LOL

Rent a Kayak at Lazy Dog!!! You’ll go through the beautiful mangroves… bring a cooler with champagne and OJ and make a day of it! When you get back you can eat at Hurrcane hole!

Take a day trip to the Dry Tortugas!

Rent a bike and ride around town … the thing I miss most about living in KW!

NIGHT LIFE

Drag shows!! KW has a great LGBT community! Check out the aquanettes at Aqua Night Club!

Locals favorite … The green Parot! if you love live music like me you have to check this out! They do 5pm sound checks that are less crowded than the actual shows!

the porch! they have a nice beer and wine bar on one side and a newer liquor bar on the other!

Just walk up DUVAL! Bars bars and more bars!

Lastly, if you have a chance to Go up the keys I have two suggestions … Bahia Honda State Park and Hawks Cay Resort!

I’ll stop there … I could go on forever!! Hahahaha! Feel free to ask more questions, I clearly love it there!
