tiffy127 :  The summer heat in key west is really not comparable to Michigan summer heat.  August is oppressive in key west, the tail end of September slightly better perhaps but storms are a real risk.  If you have a high threshold for heat then you just have to decide if the weather risk is worth it to you.  Plenty of other people are making plans to visit KW in September, it’s certainly not unheard of.

Is there a specific reason for key west?  Are you open to other places with more mild weather?  September is a beautiful month in much of the US.  That would be my thought process if it were my trip – why go somewhere that’s not great in September when so many other places are at their very best.

Personally, I would not go to Key West anytime between July – October because of the humidity and risk of tropical storms or hurricanes.  Prices are cheaper then for a reason and now through October is peak hurricane season.

If you insist on going, at least buy trip insurance in case you have to cancel or reschedule due to a storm.

tiffy127 :  so generally key west is cooler than most of florida…aka it has never been 100F.  Depending on what you are interested in doing, it could be fine, but I might get the trip insurance just in case.  THe good thing is that while it is slower a lot of restaurants and attractions have good deals.

tiffy127 :  I see.  Key west is a good destination for what you’re looking for.  I have visited KW in September myself before so obviously I personally have taken the risk.  We did get an incredible storm two days before our return home and our flights were changed by a half day if I remember correctly.  My uncle planned his honeymoon in KW and it ended up a complete no go from (maybe Wilma?  Can’t remember for sure) they had to pivot at the last minute to california I think.  Ultimately if KW is where I REALLY wanted to go I’d probably go for it.  California is a good option but I’m sure you’ve already compared flight costs and probably found a big difference.

I haven’t been to Charleston as an adult so I don’t know if it meets your needs, but I would think it might?  Or Savannah?  I’m also not sure how much better weather they offer than KW in September.  Others here can probably fill you in if they are still considerations 🙂

Have a good trip whatever you do!  I’m dying to get out of town myself soon but I’m not sure it’s in the cards.

You won’t regret KW!  I wouldn’t hesitate booking a trip, but trip insurance on the flights are a good idea and most hotels allow cancellation except within so many days of your booking.

I lived in Fort Lauderdale from 2005 to 2017 and I only had one trip I had to reschedule due to a storm.  I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been to KW, but it’s well in the double digits. We often went in summer because of the good hotel deals.

PS, if you need recommendations, let me know!  I was just in KW this last June and I don’t even live in SoFla anymore.

tiffy127 :  We LOVE key west and try to go every year. We havent been in Sept normally Feb-April BUT If this is the only time you can afford it..GO!

You can always jump in the pool/ocean to cool off, do activities in the early morning ect.

I wouldn’t let the weather stop me. But do buy trip insurance, due to hurricane risk. Also book with free cancellation.

If you need any recs PM me! your ideas so far sound great! There are not a ton of beaches in KW,  but if you can afford it I would stay at the Southernmost Beach Resort- beach access and three pools. Great hotel.

Also I have been to both CHS and SAV and thoroughly enjoyed them. They would likely be less risky and probably still warm,  but KW is my favorite for sure. The Atlantic ocean wrecks me so I don’t really enjoy swiming in EC.

The Florida Keys are being evacuated due to Hurricane Irma.  Still sounds like they aren’t sure where it will make landfall but it’s a MAJOR Cat5 hurricane….no surprise since September is the peak of Atlantic hurricane season.

Hopefully you took our advice and either decided to travel elsewhere or bought trip insurance!

Are you saying key west for this year, 2017? They’re having mandatory evacuations for Irma.  I know it’s still about 3 weeks out that you want to go…. but it could be a total mess there.  I’d worry about that
