Closing is when the house legally becomes your property. I see no reason why you shouldn’t get the keys on that day.

@lightmist:  We got ours at closing!  Otherwise have the realtor take off the box-thingy and call a locksmith!

You get the keys at closing. It is legally yours then so I don’t see how you wouldn’t…

We got our keys at closing 🙂

I immediately went to the house and danced around in the kitchen.

If they hadn’t given me the keys, the dancing would have had to wait 🙁 it would have been torture!

You should get the keys at closing, when the house legally becomes yours.

Note I said should.  In our case, our lunatic sellers had barely started moving out at closing, so we ended up giving them two extra freaking days to get out.  (Partly because the house was filthy, so we wanted them to have plenty of time to CLEAN!)

@lightmist:  I don’t see why not. We got them at our closing. But, I’m not familiar with whether new construction differs any.

We got our keys at closing, but I did notice a clause in the paperwork which states that keys may be held for 24-48 hours.

I asked my realtor about this.  Sometimes the keys are held if the wire transfer between the fiancing company doesn’t come through to the title company right away.

We didn’t get our keys at closing.  I don’t know why we did it different, but we go the garage code and the keys were sitting on the kitchen counter when we got there the next day.

yes, you should receive your keys on the closing date after all financial transactions have been confirmed.  unsually pick up the keys at the lawyer’s office.

on my last new build, i got my keys directly from the builder.  it was a small custom build company, with very personal service.  i did the walk through with him and we both made any necessary notes together.  then he handed over the keys.
