OMG – I totally agree!  I got a cell phone for my 16th birthday (and my siblings were the same).  My parents figured that since we could now drive we’d be out on our own with friends and would need a way to contact them, to call for help if we were in a car accident, etc.  Made a lot of sense to me!

There is zero need for an 8 or 9 year old to have a cell phone.

Who on earth is an 8 year old texting?? I’m the same as KMM, I got a phone when I got a car.  The only phones I understand for little kids are the ones that have like four buttons on them and you can preprogram them to only call mom and dad.

One of my neices has a cell phone she is only 7 but it is because she has a low life mother who never pays her phone bill so when she has the kids the kids of noway of contacting people as they are often left with babysitters. So she has a cell phone with only 4 buttons of people she can call if she needs help/is in an emergency situation. Other than that though I don’t think a kid needs a cell phone until they are high school age/ can pay for it themselves.

This makes me mad because I feel in general like kids are so entitled nowadays. My parents would never DREAM of giving me a cell phone along with letting me eat sugary or processed foods, putting up with me being on 4 sports teams at once, so many other crazy things that are now the norm. It makes me sick to see parents now as slaves to their children who are really king and queen of the household! Before you know it, the kids are going to start feeling entitled to take over the master bedroom and the parents will be in bunkbeds!

I don’t get it! I was at Denny’s on Monday and there was a group of ladies and some kids sitting near us.  This one girl, she had to be 7 or 8, had a nicer cell phone than me!  It looked like an IPhone! Now, when I was that age I never went anywhere where I needed a cell phone! I’m like you girls, when I turned 16 and started driving, I got a phone. Even then I didn’t get my own.  I used my mom’s phone for a few months! Kinds these days are so spoiled!

wow. I got a cell phone my sophmore year in college – yes I lived through high school and 1.5 years of college without one.  no it was not years ago – it was 2005 when i got one.

Although I think its crazy, we’re going to have to get used to the fact that it’s the norm.

I got a cell when I was 16 and started driving. I could see myself getting a kid a cell around 14 or so (which is when I imagine I’d feel comfortable dropping them off at the mall to walk around with their friends or something). Earlier than that? No way.

I think it’s different with the new generation.  You’re probably not “cool” if you don’t have a cell phone (kinda like when you were only “cool” if you had a TrapperKeeper!).  My neice is texting ALL THE TIME and she’s only 11.  But she wouldn’t have any friends if she didn’t have a phone.  Seriously.

I still think they need to go out and get a life, but that’s the same thing they say about my generation and the internet (and look where I am…STILL).  So…

I guess I’m just as frustrated, but at the same time what else can you do?  It SUCKS to be the unpopular kid, and there’s no way you could look your kid in the face and say “No cell phone for you, I want you to be a loser!”

I’m not looking forward to the decisions I’ll have to make for my daughter.

Cell phones weren’t too common until I was in my early 20’s, but I wasn’t even ever allowed to have my own private phone line in my HOUSE when I was a teenager.

So Agree! I’m 21 but wasn’t allowed to have a cell phone until I was 16 and driving. And even then, it was only because I had to drive 30 mins to school and we lived out in BFE! It drives me crazy when I see anyone younger than 16 with a cell phone!

I think things are just different now. I didnt get my first phone until I was 16 and started driving. My co-worker has 3 boys, her youngest is 7 and he has a “kid phone” all it can do is text and call numbers she puts in there for him. It’s so that he can let her know when he gets home from school (since he rides the bus and a neighbor takes him) and if he needs anything. I actually think its great. She’s such a busy mom that I know it helps her feel connected to him when she can’t be physically next to him.
