These are from the “nerdy baby” line. I got some for my niece and nephew and they’re geek-tastic to say the least. I’d consider them educational =]. She has a whole line of Nerdy Baby stuff floating around….and they might be a little young for flashcards, but the artwork is really fantastic and colorful

A lot of people in my family with babies are asking for the My Pal Violet or My Pal Scout from LeapFrog.

I think books is the best gift idea for this age group. Can never have too many books!

Don’t be afraid to ask the mom’s for ideas based on your theme.  “I’d like to get them some books/toys – can you recommend something you don’t already have.”

I always have a wishlist in my head for things I’d like to get for Warren.

I’m always afraid when I’m buying for my nieces/nephews that they already have stuff so I double check with the parents before buying.

This thread has a lot of good ideas for babies in that age range.

Books are always good, but as others have said, I would check with the parents first to make sure you don’t get them something they already have. I have several books that most parents typically have, so I’d hate to get a second Goodnight Moon or 10 Little Rubber Ducks. How about some puzzles, obviously the ones with pieces that babies can’t fit into their mouths.

For the five month old, perhaps an Exersaucer if they don’t already have one. My daughter is almost six month and received one from her aunt and uncle over Thanksgiving. She loves it. Anything interactive is really good.

I usually go by age with toys, but there’s nothing wrong with getting something that they can use later. I plan on getting our daughter the V-tech 3-in-1 Learning Zebra Scooter, and it’s supposed to be for 18 month olds. I’ll be honest and say I’m buying it now, because I have a $5 off coupon for it. Plus, it grows with her, so I’ll get use out of it for more than a few months.

I know both of my examples are a little pricey, but hopefully that help you get an idea.
