I wanted a big, white, tulle-ish ballgown. Something like this.

Yeah, I ended up with the opposite. I guess the lesson is to always be open to trying things on!

I never bought into the whole trying-something-on-that-you-think-you’ll-hate-and-end-up-loving. I know what my body looks good in, and I hate certain styles of dresses for a good reason. Guess that’s just me, though.

Anyway, before I got engaged I always pictured myself in an all-lace vintage style sheath dress like this:

But, after getting engaged and looking at dresses online, I stumbled across THE DRESS that nothing else compared to. It’s still very similar to what I originally imagined, but with a fuller tulle skirt.

Iinitially wanted a lace dress and had picked one the first time I went dress shopping.

lace

I then changed my mind again and decided I wanted a sparkly ballgown.

I then finally decided on a strapless A-line dress. It had the details on top I was looking for and the ivory/champagne color looked great on me.

I wanted empire, flowy, and tulle, and I got just that but with the bonus of colored beading.

I ended up going with almost exactly what I wanted!

I very nearly went for the Essense of Australia. Completely not what I would have chosen. It did crazy things for my figure. My tummy VANISHED. No shape wear required. I couldn’t believe it! Even looking at the picture now I feel a twinge of regret.

In the end I bought the ever popular Maggie Sotterro Lorie. I wanted sweet heart neckline and lace. The sample was 2-3 sizes too big so it was hard to get a proper idea of fit. I have my fingers crossed that it will hold me in the right places when my size comes in/is altered!

I wanted mermaid, no embellishments, lots of texture and visual interest at the bottom, and something understated at the top. I tried on a ton of dresses and was going to settle for the Maggie Sottero Divina, but Vera Wang Gemma was my dream dress and I wasn’t going to be able to give my vision up!

After I tried it on, it didn’t feel as magical as I thought it would and I felt lost. I started trying on everything…  Lace, ball gowns, long trains, bling…

And I ended up with this! A heavily beaded bodice with crystals and pearls with a blizzard sequin underskirt and crystal embellished tulle skirt…  Besides the mermaid silhouette it’s pretty much the opposite of what I was going for lol.

Originally I did not want lace. I did want a fit and flare. I ended up trying on mostly lace or beaded mermaids/fit and flares. I ended up with lace, but it is a more modern lace that fades to tulle at the bottom. I found that some lace just looked like old lady doilies.

I wanted something like this… Trumpet, lace, belt.

What I ended up getting was more of a fit and flare with lots of beading up top and lace. I will be adding slightly off the shoulder straps with beading that matches.

yellowsprings:  funny! I am the exact opposite of You. I started out wanting a simple, non-fussy dress like the one you ended up with.

i was even looking at this $300 dress from macys:

But it I ended up with this dress that looks similar to the one you thought you wanted. It even has the same neckline. It’s way more fussy and ornate than I imagined, but I really love it.

I wanted something trumpet or otherwise flattering, not overly extravagant. Not white. Maybe lace. Not strapless. I pretty much ended up with that: Photo_Feb_07,_7_26_33_PM_copy
