Fiance and I are getting ready to pick out the stuff for our new kitchen. We have decided to do stainless steel appliances, change the floor and countertops, and a back splash. It is not in the budget to get new cabinets, plus they are in good shape and don’t really need replaced. The only problem is we have light-medium colored cabinets. I feel like the neutral colors we prefer match better with dark wood cabinets. Have any of you ever done a light cabinet with a darker floor or counter? We are having trouble picking what color flooring and counter would look good with our existing cabinets. Pictures would be great!

We have all white so I really don’t have any personal experience. But I think it would be nice to have lighter cabinets with darker floors, otherwise the room would seem too dark.

We have stainless appliances and I hate them! They always look dirty and streaky no matter what I use to clean them!

If you get the dark stuff in and you hate it would it be in your budget (I mean moneywise and timewise) to refinish the cabinets? Or maybe even painting over the stain would be an option?

How exciting! We are just about finished with our new kitchen. Got the counter and sink yesterday (after a 12 day wait) and I finally as of tonight can cook and use our kitchen again!!. Yay! We got very dark cabinets, with a medium-light floor and medium-light shade counter. But I agree with you that with lighter cabinets, a dark counter will be much nicer. My husband and I googled kitchen images and looked at hundreds to help us find something we liked! We also took a sample of our new cabinet that they gave us when we ordered them with us to look at flooring and counters. That helped. Have fun picking everything! 🙂

@JoJo Bananas: I have no issue with our ss appliances. What brand are yours? are they the bare ss or coated?
I think dark floors are strange with medium cabinets. I think it only works when the cabinets are white. However Darling Husband just re-did are kitchen and we have more neutral floors and tops with our medium cabinets. Here’s pics of the remodel I put in another post

@mwitter80: They are all GE: fridge, cooktop, oven, dishwasher. Not sure if they are coated or not. I didn’t buy them….

I have just chosen colours for our kitchen as we are in the process of building.
I have chosen a grey slate tile. Silvery kickboards, white cabinets with a dark grey counter top and white splash back.
I figure if i keep all fixtures in the house neautral, I can add colour with accessories, paintings etc etc. Because they can be easily removed when i get sick of the colour. I am doing no feature walls but keeping everything white in the kichen. I figure that will brighten the room and open it up a little as the floor will be grey.
I really think tho that almost the wood should act as a feature and everything else should brighten it all up. But thats just personal taste 🙂
Would love to see pics of what you have in mind!

i should add a picture. as of yesterday, we started talking about getting the cabinets refinished. the rest of our house is pretty neutral, so hopefully it all matches?
mtwitter80, i love the pictures! that is the look we are going for but our cabinets are lighter.

I agree with a pp – if you hate it, is it in the budget to refinish the cabinets? It can be done relatively cheaply.
