It’s been 8 months since he proposed but I’ve never shared the story on WB, so here goes:
One Wednesday evening, Fiance came home from work and wanted to go to dinner all of the sudden. Thought that was strange that he wanted to go immediately since I was in sweats! I told him I needed to get something out of the car (that I thought was unlocked). The car was locked so I came back to get the keys that were in our bedroom when I overheard him on the phone in the other room say “Let me let you go before she gets suspicious”.
Hmm.. we live with his mom right now so I didn’t know which “she” he was referring to. I shut the bedroom door (which he heard!) and walked back outside. When I came back in, he said, “I was looking for you. Were you just in the house?” and I thought OK, I said I was going to the car that’s in the driveway, it’s not like I was going far. Haha! Now, I hard a strong suspicion that something was up but I wasn’t 100 % sure b/c we talked about marriage months ago and it was something he didn’t enjoy talking about!
We had been dating for four years (technically one month before the 4 year mark) so I was “testing” him to see if that’s what was about to happen (I know, it’s terrible!!) so I told him I really didn’t want to get dressed just wanted to stay in my sweats (just to see how he reacted! Again, I know that’s terrible!). He said, “We don’t have to go to dinner, let’s just have a date night, let’s go to a drive in movie so you can stay in your sweats” (the drive in is just a short drive away). I agreed b/c I thought at this point since we weren’t going out for dinner, he really did want just a date night.
He didn’t act nervous the whole drive there, but seemed a little distracted when we got there. He seemed to be confused which lane to go to get to our movie (if you’ve been to a drive in, you’d understand what I mean). It was dark so I thought it’s either nerves or he really has no idea where to go. So, we’re sitting in the car, we’re hungry so he leaves to get food at the stand which took FOREVER.
Finally, he is back with a tray full of stuff: our burgers, fries and three cups– two of the cups were regular sized, the other was a smaller cup. I asked him “why do we have three cups?” and he said, “they gave us a dessert or something, I don’t know what that is I haven’t checked yet”. He knows I LOVE desserts so I thought we got some for free b/c of the long wait.. so I go for “the BAIT”!! This part seemed like it went in slow motion: I reached for the yummy dessert, popped open the lid and expected to immediately see what it was. I looked further down the cup thinking “where is my dessert?!” and …there my life-changing diamond sat at the bottom of the cup!!
He turns to me and says, “Well (my name)” and I can’t remember anything else he said b/c the whole time I was thinking THIS IS IT! IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!!
…and then came, “Will you marry me?” and I said “OF COURSE!” then I immediately asked, “did you ask my dad?”
Come to find out: the person he was on the phone with earlier…
yup, my dad!
His story: He ordered the ring months earlier and it just arrived in the mail that morning to his job…he was too excited to wait and that’s why he was in a hurry to rush off to get me to go out with him. He tried to call my dad then but had an old # so he had to wait until he got home to check the caller ID for his current #.
He had to think on his feet when I was being uncooperative and I give him props for that. I would never want to burst the happy bubble b/c I truly was surprised!! Maybe I will tell him when our future kids are adults and want to hear our engagement story.
OK, your turn!! I want to hear from those ladies that knew but still were super surprised by the actual proposal!
