My fiance and I picked out the ring together so I knew we would get engaged and married, but the question was when.  We had planned a date night so I was excited for that! and he said why dont you put that new dress on that you just got, it will make it for a really great date night dress.. So I said OKay and I did, not thinking too much of it.

So were at dinner on a Friday night (dec 16!!) and he is rubbing my ring finger!!! Ummm clue much?!  So were eating at our favorite place, which is basically a dive bar as hes doing this and I am the most blunt person.. I just said.. Are you proposing tonight?  He got so defensive! He said No because the one store wont resize the ring since we didnt get the setting there and the other store is so backed up with Christmas, and New Years orders that it looks like your ring wont come in until early January.

Well at that point he said that I just totally sank.  I basically deflated and said oh its ok, I know it will happen and I said can we just get the check and go home?  lets just finish the evening.  So we get the check and are walking down the main street and he said Im sorry sweetie, are you disappointed?  I said no because theres nothing that you could have done any different.  He stopped me in front of this big mural and said…”I have been lying to you all night”  At which point I turned around and he was on his knee!!  He started with how much he loved me and I kinda blacked out and dont remember much of his speech but I know I loved it and I of course said YES!

He asked my dad too, the week before when we were at his house visiting!

Thanks for sharing your story, people always ask how it could have been a surprise when I knew it was happening!

Awe ladies, these stories are so great. I’m glad I’m not the only one who was surprised even thought I knew it was coming – or maybe I should have known and just didn’t catch on.

My Fiance and I also picked out the ring together I even knew the day he went to pick it up. My Grandmama (who raised me since I was 4 months) went with him and my best friend works at the jewelry store. But I wasn’t really paying attention and I was more excited that he and “mama” had come to have dinner with me. I was living an hour away from both of them at the time and I missed them.

Fast forward another month I come home from work on a Friday. Grumpy and fed up because Fiance has barely said two words to me all day (SO unusual) and he also told me he had to work and I would not be seeing him. As I trudged up the sidewalk to the apartment  Fiance stepped from his hiding place. He informed me that I had to pack my clothes, hands me a list of what to pack and says we’re leaving very early the next morning as he’s planned a vacation for us. Now, if I had been on my  A-game I probably would have figured out
“the moment” would happen on this trip. But, I hadn’t had a vacation (even an extra day off) in more than two years and my Great Aunt who  was one of my absolute best friends had died two months before from cancer. Her birthday would have been in October and I had spent every available moment with her for the past two years. So I really just thought Fiance was trying to help me deal with the grief as she and I were very close and she was the only family I had in the town I lived in.

So we get on a plane (I see from the ticket it’s going to Florida). We get off the plane, take a taxi (FI still has not told me where we are going) and we pull up to a cruise ship. We get on the ship I am absolutely overwhelmed and amazed he planned this whole thing out by himself. Later that night we took a walk under the stars and the moon and I was fussing (in my head) about my hair getting tied into knots by the wind, when Fiance tugged on my shirt. I turned around and there he was on one knee. He kept it short and just said “Will you Marry Me?” Cue tears and laughter and me sniffling a bit before I can squeak out yes.

It was perfect and a total surprise despite “knowing” it was coming. I couldn’t have asked for more. After we kissed and hugged and grinned like idiots we went down to dinner and I promptly fell down the stairs. Yep, story of my life. Undecided

Yep– We talked about rings. I knew the ring was with us on our two week trip (what I didn’t know is if I hadn’t been so typically me and wanted to go to the gym to run instead of running outside with my then-boyfriend I would have gotten it the day before the trip). I knew I wasn’t going to get it in the first part of the trip, because we had nothing really special planned and I was not feeling so hot. So I knew it was going to be Wednesday (waterfalls) or Friday (mountains)

So we had an amazing Tuesday night and I was so excited for the waterfalls that neither of us slept well (well more then bf didn’t sleep well and his tossing and turning kept me up) and then we had an amazing breakfast and went off on our adventure. He was being quiet and strange, not really enjoying it. I thought it meant it wasn’t going to happen, so I was going to enjoy it anyway. We waded through the crowds and I finally got to a stretch of hiking with no body there. I was so happy to walk fast and here he was stopping to get another drink of water. I turned around and told him to hurry up, and there he was fumbling with the ring box. Turned out, he was proposing. Such a happy surprise!

My Fiance and I had just been on a vacation in the Spring.  A couple months later he really wanted to go on another one.  I thought it was a bit soon to go on another vacation but I was somewhat suspicious so I decided to go ahead and request time off from work so we could go.  He really wanted to go to Bermuda.  I had never been there although I have traveled a lot so I thought perhaps he just wanted to take me somewhere new.  However, I also knew that his parents met in Bermuda and I was wondering if it was simply a coincidence or if he was planning to propose.  He planned everything, including getting reservatons for dinner each night at some wonderful places.  The first night we had dinner on the beach, the tables were on the sand with tiki torches and the waves come right up next to you.  I really thought he might propose then but he didn’t!  The next night he had reservations for us at the 5 star restaurant in the hotel so I thought perhaps he was waiting to do it then.  We got up in the morning ready to do some sightseeing and he said he wanted to go see the lighthouse.  I didn’t think anything of it so we went.  We had perfect timing, just as we arrived a large group of tourists were climbing down so we had the top to ourselves.  We tried to take some pictures of the scenery (you can see the entire island from up there) but his camera lens fogged up due to the high humidity.  He bent down to switch lenses and instead pulled the ring out of his camera bag and asked me to marry him!  It never ocurred to me he would propose in the morning.  I had just assumed it would be at dinner one night.  That night we got to go to our dinner reservation and tell them we were celebrating our engagement.  It was the perfect vacation and it means so much to me that he proposed in the country where his parents met and I got to experience the place he spent many family vacations while growing up.

My Fiance and I had discussed a timeline of getting engaged. We had decided that we would be engaged by the end of the next summer (so, we set about a year…we had been dating about 4 years at this point).

Fiance lived out of town at this point, so it really narrowed down opportunities. It had gotten to be August, and I was starting to feel bummed out. I was looking forward to starting the school year with a ring on my finger. However, he technically had until mid September. Plus, I was going out to visit Fiance the next weekend, so there was hope then! My mom called me on a Tuesday night, wanting to know if I wanted to go out to dinner on Saturday to celebrate the new school year. This wasn’t really out of character, so I said yes.

That Saturday, she told me to dress up a bit because we were going to a nice restaurant (again, not out of ordinary…my family does this somewhat often). My mom, stepfather, and I went to a trendy bar to have some drinks and appetizers while we waited for my stepfather’s friend to meet up with him. My mom starts waving, and I turn around. Fiance walks through the door with a big smile on his face and whisks me off to dinner! Since he wasn’t supposed to be in town this weekend, I knew that he was going to propose. We went to dinner at a favorite restaurant, then stopped by a favorite local place of ours. His grandma happens to have an engraved brick at this place. We found the brick (which is in front of a water fountain), and he proposed! It was absolutely perfect :-). I later found out that he got into town the night before and took my dad out to ask for his blessing.

  • Wedding: April 2013

We got engaged last night πŸ™‚ I knew it was coming….. sometime – we designed a ring and he picked it up 6 months ago, and I’ve never seen it. I went to a bridal show, at his insistence, in April, because he said we would be engaged once we have bought a house so I should go (we have been househunting the last few months).

I entered all the usual competitions and promotions etc while I was there. One of the competitions was for a dream wedding at a luxury lodge in an alpine village here in NZ, famous for its hot springs, including accommodation for all the guests, dinner, celbrant, cake, drinks and canapes etc.

Anyway, fast forward a couple of months to yesterday, I got a phone call – I HAVE WON THE WEDDING!  FH comes home, I tell him and burst into tears haha. But because we’re not officially engaged, I feel like I can’t tell anyone!

In the car on the way to a friends that night, he tells me that he will “engage me” (his funny wording hehe) soon, so that we could tell people abot our amazing luck. We also set the month etc of our wedding (April next year) So I knew it was coming.

But I didn’t know when! When we got home from our friends, our youngest daughter (aged 2) wouldn’t settle. I ended up giving up and bringing her through to our bed, changing into my PJS and going through to brush my teeth etc for bed.

When I came back through, Miss 2 was in our bed with FH, holding a ring box out saying “look, Mummy! Look!” I clicked to what it was, and started crying straight away. haha. He asked me to marry him, I said yes and he put the beautiful beautiful ring on my finger πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

So, I knew it was coming, but I honestly didn’t think it would be last night! Neither did he, apparently, it just struck him once we came home and he went with it. Initially, he was wearing a shirt etc and was going to get down on one knee, but once he realised our baby girl was up and coming through, he had to do some quick thinking, whip the shirt off and jump into bed lol.

So wonderful – and I’m so happy πŸ™‚

LOL i know exactly what you mean! I live in Miami, and there’s a huge Flamenco community here. My mom took me to a tablao when I was 7, and was mesmerized by the dancers. I saw them as Goddesses, and knew that’s what I wanted to do. So I started taking classes and when I graduated high school I left on tour for about 4 years.  I now dance at tablos in Miami on occasion ; )

p.s changed my avatar pic to pic of me dancing = )

My Fiance and I picked out my ring together.  That was NOT the plan.  We intended to just look at various styles so he could see what I liked.  We’d talked about marriage and were living together (which we did with the understanding that we were headed towards marriage).  I thought I liked one particular style, but when I saw it on my finger, I felt “meh.”  Fiance pointed to a setting that I wouldn’t have selected, put I put it on, and when the jewler placed the diamond on top, we both knew that was it.  I’m actually really glad that my ring was one he picked.  Anywho, that was July.  Then I waited for him to actually ask me.

We went on vacation in August.  Nothing.  Then he basically said that he wanted it to be some grand gesture in some grand place.  I said grand place is for the honeymoon, not the proposal.  None of my favorite proposal stories require going to a far off land, but rather incorporate places and things that relate to the couple.  Fiance is friends with my bridesmaid, so she talked him down from the forign travel idea.  In September, Fiance talked really excitedly about a date night he had planned.  He even asked if I could take the day off work.  I knew that had to be it (he even said, “[the proposal]’s coming sooner than you think!).  Sooo not slick.  When that day was forecasted to be rainy, he was so down.  If he were smooth, he would have just taken me to dinner, to a movie, whatever.  So we rescheduled our “date” for Saturday.  I got a manicure and told my friends we were getting engaged on Saturday.  πŸ™‚

He took me to brunch at the restaurant where we shared our first date. Although the restaurant doesn’t take reservations, he arranged to have our first date table held for us. After brunch, we picked up our dog (of course he had to be included!), and headed to my favorite part of Central Park. We sat on a blanket and played cards while listening to music. He played the song that was playing during our first kiss, and asked me if I knew the significance of 1,161 (the number of days since we met). I heard guitar playing behind me, and turned around to see local singer/songwriter Anthony da Costa walking towards us while singing his song “Let Me Die in Your Arms.” This is the song that was playing while we first said “I love you.” After the song, on one knee, he expressed his innermost feelings and asked me to be his bride. Of course I said yes! Anthony played another song, and I asked him to have this dance. We slow danced in our stocking feet during the serenade.  It was easy to pick our first dance song!  πŸ™‚
