Looking for some thoughts for an upcoming trip my husband and I have this summer. My SIL is getting married in Hawaii and we’re going to Ohau for the wedding. We decided to travel 4 days before the rest of the family to have a mini vacation to ourselves.
My husband wants to spend the time in Kuaui and I’ve heard great things about Maui. We’re both very outdoorsy– enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities but we also enjoy a little relaxing time on the beach, but I would not go as far to say that we are “beach bums”.
Given the fact that we enjoy the outdoors and hiking, etc., based on past experience/knowledge etc. where would you suggest we go for a few days? I’d love to hear any activity/destination suggestions in either place! Thanks bees! 🙂

If you’re outdoorsy I’d do Kauai, we went hiking, did a helicopter tour and did a dune buggy thing there. Maui was a lot more lounging around and eating.

From what I remember, Kuaui was more rainforesty and lush, and Maui was more mountainous and dry. Both had beautiful beaches but if i wanted to do some hiking I would pick Kuaui. If you get a chance to drive around, the fruit stands along the highways had a type of passion fruit I’ve never seen anywhere else and have been dreaming about for fifteen years. They were orange and soft and you bit into them and sucked the inside out. Heavenly. Try one if you get a chance.

Darling Husband and I honeymooned there this past Sep-Oct. All the islands are very different, but if you are looking for something outdoorsy then I would say go for Kauai. We did a kayaking and hiking trails. There are so many outdoorsy/advetture type things you can do there (helicopter rides, sunset sails, kayaking, trails, etc)
As others have said, its very lush and beautiful. If you drive up the north coast you can definitely go to some beaches up there (we stopped at a few one day when we just decided to do a drive up as far north as we could), we were on the southeast end of the island at the Grand Hyatt.
However, if you guys are looking for adventure/outdoorsy stuff…I think Big Island is probably the way to go from what I have heard!

@FutureMrsAJG: +1! Oh God- you just brought me back with the passion fruit stand! OP- Try TEN if you get the chance!!
Maui is a little too touristy for my taste. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t turn down a trip by any means! Hana is one of my top 3 spots in the world. 🙂 But, if I had a choice- Kauai!

Yes if you are outdoorsy Kauai 100%. You can still go to the beach, but they have the best hikes and outdoor activities between the two.

Yay!! Thanks for all the feedback!! I guess we’ll definitely be sticking with Kuaui. It’s funny because two of my co-workers both went to Maui on their honeymoons and totally voted for Maui. We’ll be spending most of our time (week and a half) on the big island with my husband’s family so I’m sure there will be plenty to do there but our mini vacation will be Kuaui. Yay! Thanks! 🙂

@hearts348: I see you’ve decided, but I agree. We’ve been both places, and while I would choose Maui now (with a child), I would definitely do Kuaui again for just the two of us, especially if you’re outdoorsy!

@hearts348: Just to add, we did an entire week in Kauai last year so you may not be up for doing this but we kayaked the Na’ Pali coast. It was freaking fabulous. It was a whole day trip though, and although we had a really easy day winds and current wise, it was not so easy for some people. It’s definitely something you want to do only if you are adventurous and in decently good shape. I’m pretty sure my Mother-In-Law had the WORST day of her life that day.
There are of course other way’s to see it but that was a once in a lifetime for sure.

@hearts348: I’ve lived on Oahu, Kauai, and the big island.. Kauai is my favorite and the most beautiful by far! Maui is definitely more touristy-leaning. Kauai is the perfect mix of everything, and like everyone said very lush! Great beaches, nice hiking. The big island is great for hiking as well, especially if you are interested in the lava fields!

Yay!! I’m getting so excited! Thanks for the feedback everyone!
@MsJ2theZ: I’m going to tell my husband about kayaking along the coast– that’s sounds like a fantastic idea and it’s right up our alley.
Anyone have recommendations on where to stay? We’re planning to get the hotel booked this weekend. I can’t remember the specific places we were looking at before (we started our research before the holidays) but I think we were hoping to be around the Koloa-ish area.

My Future Brother-In-Law went to Kuai, Maui and Hawaii for their honeymoon. They were expecting to love Kuai the most but they said they were it was disappointed. Apparently Kuaui is a good for lots of activites but they just didn’t like it. They liked Hawaii best

For lots of great hiking and outdoorsy stuff…KAUAI!! It is so relaxing and beautiful everywhere. Go kayaking down Wailua or the Na pali coast and go to Ke’e beach. 🙂
OH! and get Malasadas from the little lady in front of Kmart in Lihue. We ate so many of those damn things.

@hearts348: I prefer Kauai as well. Seemed more “untouched” and lush as others have said. But it’s very easy to island hop and spend time on more than one island!

Good choice on Kuaui! I’ve been to both and would certainly pick Kuaui to go back to if I had the choice. Have fun!
