We have a trip to Tokyo planned in Dec. I can only go for like 4 days which is lame because it’s a 7 hour flight from where I am but I dont want to NOT go. Anyway I feel like I REALLY REALLY have to go to Kyoto for one night even if I go without Fiance. I don’t want to miss it!! Of course there’s a chance we’ll be in Japan again one day but I gotta see it!
If anyone has been.. is this stupid? It’s a pretty quick train ride from Tokyo to Kyoto (just over 2 hours)… what do you think?

I live about 2 hours by slow public train in the other direction from Kyoto. Are you taking about just a night, or a day and a night? Most of Kyoto’s sights are best taken in by day, so I would only recommend it if you were going to spend at least one day. I would recommend Nijo-Jo (Nijo castle, but not in the traditional sense of a castle. From the 1600s I think), Mitaki-dera (a gorgeous shrine. Be prepared for crowds, especially if you are going in Autumn or Spring), Fushimi inari-taisha (has a huge walk with red tori gates – seen in memoirs of a geisha), and the bamboo grotto.
Everyone else says to see the golden pavilion – I haven’t got there yet!
Enjoy Japan 🙂

@farawayviolet: Thanks for the suggestions! We’re going in Dec so I dont think it’ll be too crowded because no one but me likes the cold weather! Can’t wait for it! I think I’d leave Toyko early and get to Kyoto by 10AM or so which would leave us some time for day adventures.
Did you eat anywhere particularly delicious while you were there?

@nushka: i usually just find little restaurants. Kyoto has a lot. (or I stop in Osaka, but that’s not so useful!)

Do it. Kyoto is awesome. I hope it snows on you, because that makes the temples even more beautiful.
