My Fiance and I live in LA but we’re getting married in his hometown, Rochester, NY next year! I couldn’t be more excited, but I’m totally overwhelmed planning a wedding across the country, especially in a town that was not the one I was raised in. Do any upstate NY brides have any advice for awesome Rochester wedding must-haves? Specifically:
– We’re 99% sure we’ll get married at the Eastman House & do the reception at Max at High Falls. Anyone have any great/bad/interesting thoughts on either place?
– Wedding planners! Or even a day-of coordinator! I’m trying not to break the bank, but I think we need at least somebody to help us the day of!
– Flowers! I hear great things about Stacey K! Anyone else used them?
– Yikes- rentals! I don’t even know where to start with rentals…anyone want to let me borrow 12 of their beautiful farm tables for a night ha?
Thanks to anyone who can help! I’m frazzled already and it’s only the beginning!

I don’t have any advice for those things listed but the videographer we are using is Jim from fruit tree studios. His videos are amazing. www.ftsnow.com He is pretty affordable too and is not too far from Rochester. Good luck planning!

Thanks @princessbelle:!! I haven’t even thought about videographers yet, so this is awesome! I have checked out a lot of photographers in the ROC area, and there seem to be some really amazing options, so I’m glad to hear about a good videographer option too. Wahoo!

Stacy K is great! I was also recommended to her but unfortunately she was unavailable the day of my wedding. if you can’t get her, I am using Kittelberger florist in webster ny, my florist is jimmy catalano and he is absolutely amazing! these are the colors I wanted:
and this is what he threw together in like 2 minutes during our consultation:
I haven’t been to max but heard its beautiful, the eastman house is of course gorgeous and historical. Both great choices in my opinion.
I’m not using a planner because I LOVE planning things myself and had so much fun doing so… but I do know of an event planner, I will get her info and get back to you.
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask! I can try to help, born and raised in rochester 🙂

@banana825: ooh thank you!! you know, it means so much to hear someone say they like my choices, because sometimes i feel like I have NO idea what I’m doing! Totally overwhelmed!
And yes, I would love any info on any planners! Or any great rentals places! I’m giving up on my dream of farm tables as the reception (sigh), but we still need chairs for the ceremony and maybe some pretty lights for the reception. Thank you so much and good luck with your planning too!!

Hey there my name is Valerie I am a local makeup artist, and I have worked with Stacy K floral and she is amazing. Sure not to disappoint. As far as rental companies there are allot in this area, LT rentals, bob spatola, Taylor rentals. You will want to call around and see who has what. I could give you an endless list of photographers, too. You can email me at [email protected]. I know I would love to work with you.

Hey! I didn’t get married in Rochester (adoringly called Rachaha) but I live about an hour away.
The Eastman House is beautiful, lots of history.
There’s an awesome crepe place there that would make a great unique rehearsal dinner or day after brunch venue! 🙂
There are also plenty of “decent” photogs in Rochester also def not LA caliber. 😉

Thanks so much for all the good info!!
We’ve decided to do the whole shebang (ceremony and reception) at Max at High Falls so we don’t have to worry about moving or decorating two places. I sadly had to let go of my Eastman House dream because we just have too many people, but I’m happy at Max’s, so it should all be good.
Now I’m just narrowing down photographers and florists! So much fun!!!
Happy daylight savings all!!

I liked Stacy K also, but I am using The topiary Florist out of Pittsford, she is like my decoratign soulmate, it will depend on the feel you want but she is AMAZING, and very reasonably priced. Part of the reason I loved her so much is that she will basically serve as my coordinator in terms of decor, she delivers and moved everythign between ceremony and reception and will stay as long as you want. I’m inviting her to stay the whole reception after she sets up but she is very very hands on and want to create a tablescape and overall theme and Itrust her tomake every table, display and nook and corner gorgeous. She will work with non traditional materials as well, we are doing a lot of succulents and white birch and branches and moss etc…
Photography is stressing me out, but if you want I have info, notes, and opinions on just about everyone in the area, many are already booked for my date Sept 29,2012 I did a giant mass email to all the photogs i could find and started crossing off based on the criteria I wanted and I’m down to about 5 right now.
Don’t limit yourself though, one of my faves is out of NYC and only charging $300 to travel to Geneva, which is pretty close to Rochester.

@macdeez: i love the pictures on the topiary florist’s website! I just had a fantastic meeting with the Pittsford Florists, which is literally down the street, so I’m pretty sure we’ll go with them because they were so flexible and willing to work with us. It sounds like you’re MY decorating soulmate!! I want succulents and moss too to go along with our sort of offbeat vibe!
For photographers, I had a great phone interview with the Krackes, who were so lovely. Ugh, it’s so scary when everybody you want starts to book up. I keep talking to vendors (especially florists) who keep saying you have plenty of time to make your decision, but then they all start booking up and this panic sets in.
I’m looking forward to finally just making these decisions and moving on to the next ones – save the dates, website, dress….I think I’m way too happy to check things off my to do list.
Good luck!! Where are you getting married, if you don’t mind my asking?

We’re Sept 29th. I have since booked a Photographer, but I am not 100% in love, so we are doign E-pics with him (the deposit to secure the date was about the same as th charge for an e session) and then if I’m happy with those we’l keep him, if not we will go back to drawing board.

We used Hanlon Weddings (http://hanlonweddings.com/ , http://michaelhanlon.wordpress.com/) for our photography and we thought they were awesome!! We thought the photos turned out amazing and they were sooooooooo fun to work with but were very professional at the same time. They also were the organizers of a wedding show in Rochester so they would lots of great recommendations.
That’s as far as my wedding rec’s go since ours was closer to Buffalo. But Darling Husband and I went to school in Rochester so we were more comfortable there.
For restaurants there’s a hidden gem–Rooney’s (http://rooneysrestaurant.com/) that I was just so impressed with (and we’ve been to many restaurants in many cities)
There’s also Lento in Village Gate (http://www.lentorestaurant.com/) which is new since I’ve left but I’ve heard great things about.
And for general information, there’s the website http://rocwiki.org/ where you can find listings of restaurants and reviews and activites. Maybe that can help!

@lrc3233 and littlebridetobe aw thank you! I’m doing smaller centerpeices, so I think we’re good for candles and stuff. I’m amazed at how much has happened since I started this thread…I’ve never heard of Rooney’s! We’re actually trying to find a rehearsal dinner place right now, so I’ll add it to the list to contact.
We have a great photographer I’m SUPER excited about (www.marydougherty.net) and I’m really thrilled about scooping up McCarthy Tents & Events for chairs and lights. I’ll update you on how it goes!
