dreamr12:  I used a heavier foundation (Estée Lauder) than normal. Everything else was the same though. Oh, one other thing is is never ever wear matte lipstick but did for the day.

yogahhh:  I love Kate and ‘the small things blog”… besides some normal work webpages that I need, I always pull up this site and hers right when I get to work!

melissa809:  Oh, thanks! I wanted to be natural and still look like myself. And surprisingly, with the Urban Decay All-Nighter – it actually stayed on well from 8:00am until after 1am! Usually by noon, it’s melted off no matter what I do.

dreamr12:  Thanks! I don’t like my hair all the way up, so half up worked for me. I had gotten my hair colored that week by the same gal that did my hair for the wedding – and thought it looked too blonde, but looked great in pics! She did a fabulous job, and she’s my normal stylist.

dreamr12:  I really wish I had invested the money I spent on my trial and hair and day of makeup in quality makeup to do it myself. I was almost in love with my trial make up but then the day of the MUA assured me the lighting was okay. Looking now at the video footage of me getting dressed in a sunlit room, my face is super orange. I feel like I look like an Oompaloompa and I paid for it!

I will be doing my own make-up because I don’t wear any foundation or powder and I just know that a MUA will insist on putting it on me.  I do wear under-eye concealer, eye liner, eye shadow, and mascara.  I’ll stick with that (and maybe go a little darker) and also wear lipstick (normally just wear chapstick).

I hated the dark, dark makeup trials so I did my own too.  No regrets!  It was most important to me that I looked like me on my wedding day and felt pretty in person not just pictures 🙂

I did my own make-up because I wanted to look like myself! I’ve seen a lot of pictures of brides that didn’t look like themselves – they looked very pretty, but just nothing like they usually do! I think it turned out pretty good! I experimented with different ways of applying make-up, and contouring, starting about 3 months before the wedding. Plus, I did a bunch of research on Pinterest. Don’t have any close-ups on this computer, but here’s a couple of our wedding pics:

As a former MUA I have a few recommendations.

1) false lashes for everyone.  Photography tends to make even the most bountiful natural lashes look invisible.  Individual falsies look natural and are quite easy to apply.

2) Test out your foundation thoroughly! A good MUA should always match you in natural light.  Make sure to test the color as the day wears on, sometimes foundations oxidize and change color (usually become darker and/or more arange).  Take photos with and without flash to make sure you don’t get white flashback (aka ghostface).  Make sure it is long-lasting and does not separate when mixing with your skin’s oil.  If you plan on having a fake tan on the big day, make sure to match the foundation to the tan (using the same brand and application technique)!

3) Go heavier with the blush and contour!  Flash photography really washes you out!  It may look a little heavy in person, but you will look perfect in photos.  If you don’t want a bright pink or peach blush you could try something more nude like the Tarte amazonian clay blush in exposed, Hourglass ambient lighting blush in mood exposure or NARS douceur.

4) Define your brows!  You don’t need to go crazy, not everyone wants the “instabrow” on their wedding day, but photography can seriously make your brows look invisible.  Especially if you’re blonde or have sparser brows.  Try filling in with a cool toned powder or brow pencil.

5) Do not use a bronzer as your contour powder!  Unless you are quite tan it won’t look natural.  Try a cool toned powder like NYX taupe blush or Makeup Geek barcelona beach eyeshadow.

6) Contour for your face shape.  The “3E” method does not work for everyone.  You can easily find charts online for each face shape.

7) Use mostly matte eyeshadows.  Especially if you’re contouring the crease with a deeper shade. The shimmer will flash back in photographs and basically undo the work you put in.

I could go on forever, but I’ll stop here!

rendezvous89:  You look gorgeous!  Make sure to take a picture with a very bright/strong flash before the big day.  MUFE HD powder is notorious for white flashback on some people!
