I’m hoping maybe one of you guys had a similar experience and can offer some insight?
I was born outside the country (latin country where 2 last names is common) and on my birth certificate from my birth country I have 2 last names. Smith and Bob.
When I became naturalized as a U.S citizen, one of those names was dropped. This happened when I was a child. Smith was the name that was dropped. Ever since then I’ve been known as TheWeirdo Bob, legally, in the USA.
I recently got married and was able to add both of my birth last names on the marriage certificate because I showed an original copy of my birth certificate. I added Smith and Bob
What I would like to do is drop Bob, my current last name, and keep Smith, the birth last name that was dropped on my naturalization certificate but that is present on my birth certificate and marriage certificate. My wife would also like to keep Smith as her new last name. Keep in mind Smith is not my legal last name anymore.
Went to the local social secruity office and was, very rudely, told that my marriage certificate can not have my birth last name, because once I became naturalized, the naturlization certificate, which dropped Smith as my last name, is my new legal “birth certificate”, thus making my marriage certificate invalid, since it doesn’t have my legal last name (it does, it just also has my other birth last name, which was approved by the clerk’s office at the time of my wedding).
Long story short, I was not able to change my name that day. I called the SS# posted on their website, and explained my situation. Lady confirmed that jerk face and his supervisor were wrong and encouraged I mail the documents to my home states SS office (Florida). I did and now I’m waiting to get my documents back, hopefully confirming the name change and thus allowing me to move on with my life. I got married in Las Vegas, Nevada by the way.
Has anyone gone through this? If so, how did it turn out? Did you encounter the same issues?
Being told a million different things about what is and isn’t allowed is so draining and honestly I’m not asking for much. I just want my birth last name for crying outloud!
