Any funny or awkward reactions to your engagement?
I am newly engaged, and I have had some funny reactions. First of all, I’m not a young bride-to-be, and I was always someone who swore she would never marry. I have had a surplus of shocked gal pals, but the funniest was my aunt who was happy I was not going to “die alone.” Another came this weekend when I brought my FH to my dad’s small town. One old friend (not close to him at all…saw him at the bar) said, “Shoot me an invite. I won’t go, but it would be nice to be invited.”

I don’t see the humor or awkwardness of these. These are just rude.

My boss: “I hope you don’t plan on getting pregnant anytime soon.” -_- Pretty sure that was not legal to say…

I’ve been with my partner for over 4 years. We called his grandmother a couple hours after getting engaged. So Fiance goes: “Grandma! We have great news! We’re engaged!”
Crickets. Then finally she says “I thought you were engaged this whole time…I was hoping you’d tell me you were doing your PhD…”
She really wants him to get his PhD lol (he just finished his masters and has no plans to keep going). She also grilled him on why he didn’t get me an “official” diamond, but I averted that awkwardness by reminding her that sapphires are common for royal engagement rings (which she loves).
I think eventually she came around.

“So you’re engaged? Why are you getting married so young? Are you super religious or something?” – from a work acquaintance I had just met that morning

My (now husband) and I had been dating only 11 months when he proposed.
One of my coworkers said “Wow! You two are going to have a traditional marriage where you don’t truly know eachother before getting married! Sort of like an arrangement!”
Yikes.

I had a LOT of people get all excited when they found out, until I told them that I had proposed to him (gasp, the horror!) and then they said “oh, well you aren’t really engaged then”. My (terrible) boss refused to let me book time off for my wedding because she didn’t believe it was real.

One of my best friends said “about time, I always assumed you’d just end up a crazy cat lady”.
I pointed out that I’m still going to end up a crazy cat lady, I’ll just be a married one.
My husband’s best friend said “you’re not going to have kids are you? You don’t want to run the risk of them inheriting his nose”…

ivegotsunshine822 : Ha! Did you also get the, “Are you pregnant?” DH and I got engaged after 10 months, and I swear that was the most common reaction.

Dated FH for almost 9 years before he proposed, so we got a lot of “Finally!”. I know people that said that are happy for us, but it was kind of annoying since we waited for the timing to be right for us
