I moved to be with my SO about a year and a half ago so I’ll answer. 🙂 I was in North Carolina in the US and he was in Alberta in Canada when we first met online.

What timelines did people have when in an LDR and does this differ by age?

Initially there was no timeline, but after our first visit we decided that we needed to end the long distance part of our relationship as soon as we could.

How did your SO get you to move – did you decide to get engaged in a certain timeframe before moving in, etc.

He told me he was serious about our relationship and that this was “it” for him. We also looked at our finances and financially it made alot of sense for me to move to him where 1) I’d get almost double the pay I was making while working in the US and 2) he would be making a very good salary for someone straight out of high school.

Also, how do you handle moving countries if there are visa issues involved – did you find a job where your SO was and then wait and see how things worked out, or did you get married first, etc.?

Initially I got a work permit since I got a job transfer. Now I’m on a visitor visa and waiting for my application for permanent residence to be approved. We didn’t want to get married since we’re both relatively young still and we weren’t sure how we would deal with everyday life together. But now that we’ve been together for awhile, marriage is definitely going to happen in the next two years or so.
