OK, we want a receiving line at the church. So, the guests have greeted us and left the church. They are waiting outside with bells that the maid of honor has given them to ring when we depart the church. There are only about five steps from the church to the street where the guests will be gathered. We walk out of the church and the guests ring the bells and then what? We want to take pics at the altar with our family and bridal party as well as some street shots outside the church. So, it is not like we will leave the church, have the guests ring the bells and get in a limo and drive away. Should we not do the bells, just not leave the church after the receiving line, so the guests do the receiving line and then leave. (The reception is 3 hours later). I like the idea of our guests ringing the bells. Should we leave the church with the bells ringing, but then just mingle a little and then go back in the church for pics. Sorry, I know this might sound so insignificant, but I’m not sure what to do. I appreciate any thoughts.

First of all, have you talked to the church to make sure that you can stay for awhile there to take pictures? I know for us, we had a 3 pm wedding and they scheduled something at like 4:15. So basically, we were told that we could do the mass, do a few quick pictures at the altar (just the two of us) and then we all have to be out. We could “hang out” in the front of the church taking pictures but we couldn’t use the church anymore.
As for us, we walked down the aisile at the end and then immediately walked down the side back up to the front to take our pictures while everyone else exited. Then we walked out of the church while everyone cheered. We were supposed to have the ribbon wands I spent a day making and burned a few fingers but they were locked in my dad’s car. They lost the keys. But that’s beside the point. We didn’t do a receiving line. After we walked out, we gathered family for pics outside the church and then headed out to take pictures throughout the city. Everyone else just sort of left to do their thing and we had 2 hours between the ceremony and reception.
