I’ve always wondered this and I know there are Bees here who have done this or known someone who has gotten legally married then had a big ” wedding ” later. If the bride changes her name does she do it when they legally get married or after the ” wedding “? I’ve always wondered how people keep it a secret. Not that I am doing this ( I am majorly against it ) I am just bored at work and curious.

I think they MUST wait to change their name. I mean there’s no way they could keep that a secret.

I had a friend who got married a few weeks after me and I found out that they got legally married beforehand. We weren’t really close friends so I don’t know all the details but I do know it had something to do with their apartment and changing her name (she wanted to get the paperwork started).
I also overheard a woman at work talking in my classroom. She was on hold with the courthouse or something and when someone asked why she explained that her and her husband had a civil ceremony recently and she changed her name using her First Name Maiden Name as Middle and Married Name as Last and now she regrets so she wants to change it to First Name Middle Name Hyphenated Maiden and Married. She said this summer they are going to fly to Peru (where she’s, maybe both of them, are from) for the actual big wedding. So that’s a two name change before the big wedding.

If the bride plans to change her name, she generally declares that on the marriage license application. So the marriage license will say she has his last name, but she can wait as long as she wants to officially change her name with Social Security and such.

For some reason I heard that changing your name when you get married is free, but changing it later is not. Or maybe that is when you get divorced? Or maybe I am just making this up in my own mind, LOL.
