@TroubadourTango:  He probably could have worded it a bit differently – like asking outright about the creative process they used to make the choice and if they decided to include nudity to better represent real life. I don’t see why they got so offended either though.

@TroubadourTango:

A.  He’s a TV critic.  He should be embarassed that he doesn’t understand the point of her nudity.  My feelings are – he does understand the point but wanted to cause waves and possibly get his name out there by asking such an insulting question.

B.  You are on point.  Her nudity is not for shock, her nudity is no big deal.  I’m a naked chick – I sit around my house in my underware for no reason -she’s just showing that as part of the character.  It’s not a big deal and she show GIRLS is not trying to make it a big deal.

That “journalist” was an idiot and I’m glad he got his ass handed to him by Lena and Judd.

I hate that show.  It’s fake and annoying and yes, her being naked IS for shock value.

@peachacid:  How do you know it’s for shock value?  because it’s shocking?

Maybe it’s just a show that’s not afraid to put a chubby girl that sits around naked a lot (I mean, those do exist in real life.)  The character’s whole thing is to be kind of dumpy and confused and annoying.

And I’m not asking this in a bitchy way but…how can a show be fake?  I don’t understand

@TroubadourTango:  I can tell you why: Lena Dunham wants to be “real” and prove that unattractive, fat (by Hollywood standards) people can be naked on TV and that it should be no big deal.  She’s making a point.

@TroubadourTango:  What’s the point of them living in Brooklyn?  What’s the point of her always wearing hipster type clothes.

As a society, we’re so used to nudity being used for a reason, that when we see a girl naked for being naked it confuses us…..there is no reason in this case and it’s flipping our minds.  People don’t like it because everyone assumes there is a statement.  There is no point to be made from it.

@TroubadourTango:  I think Lena was really patient with the “whats with the nudity?” question the first 100 times she was asked it. I think in girls (as well as her previous work) she tries to portray a certain population (urban early 20 somethings). From my experience as an urban 20-something, the amount of nudity is accurate.

Aren’t all HBO shows obligated to be 25% nudity?

@peachacid:  for shock value because the only bodies we deem acceptable are the model skinny actresses.

Her use of nudity is challenging and I appreciate it. Its real in the sense that wayyyyy more women have bodies that look like that then the naked bodies we see all. the. damn. time in film/tv/commercials.

Why cant Lena be naked? And have good sex? And be comfortable with herself? Because we are uncomfortable with her body as a society. And thats fucked.

So GO LENA! GO GIRLS!

@FleeSircus:  Everyone goes on and on about how real Girls is, how it’s sooooo much better than fake old sex and the city.  Um, seriously?  She is a whiny, lazy, rich white girl who begs money from her parents.  At least in SATC they had jobs.  If you’re so poor you have to beg money from your parents, go live in their house and not in NYC.  Nothing about the show is realistic.  Also, she is annoying.

I love this show and Lena. I appreciate that the show doesn’t glamorize sex or the human body and that it makes a point to show “real” people being naked and having awkward, animalistic sex. It’s not only size 2 girls sitting around naked and thats awesome.
