I am 5’8 and most sample sizes seem to be the perfect length on me to wear small heels. My close friend (also a bride) is 6′ barefoot and all the sample sizes go to her ankles or so. I’d say your dress might be a little on the short side, but maybe you could compromise and wear small heels or even flats? It might be worth it to get the dress you’ve always wanted for the price you can afford!

I am close to 5’11 and the sample was plenty long on me (without shoes), so it seems like some designers might make them longer. (My dress is Judd Waddell) I did try on a Lazaro dress that was too short for me, so that one was probably for a 5’9 girl. Would you be willing to wear shorter shoes if you got the dress and it was just a little too short with the heels you are planning on? By changing your heel height, you could probably make the length workable, even if it is a little on the short side.

I’m shocked to hear this!

I would have assumed that sample dresses were uber long as models are usually 5’9 and up + often made to wear crazy heels!

Hmm learned something new today.

 @BambeeBliss:

Maybe another idea would be to add an extension to the length with tule?

It really depends on the designer, some gowns are longer than others. I’m 5ft 11 and I tried on dresses by Maggie, Casablanca and mori lee and all their samples were long enough for me.  i was told that the most gowns were made to fit a height of 5ft 10″ [5ft 7 actual height and 3inch heel]

@Oneeleven: the samples arent worn by models thats why alot of the samples are a bit larger than average and need to be clipped at the back, so that “most average” sized brides can get into them to get a general idea of how the dress will look.

I am 5’9″ and I also think it depends on the dress. Most dresses were perfect length for me to wear a small heel. I know when we ordered my Pronovias dress she asked me what height heel I wanted because I was right on the borderline of needing extra length. I decided to go with regular length and only wear a 2-2.5 inch heel.

So it depends on the designer and what length the salon chooses to stock as samples, but I would wager a guess that most salons choose to stock regular length because it will work for most girls.

My Mori Lee dress needed to be hemmed just a smidgen and I am 5’9”. I was told the samples are made for 5’9” give or take an inch on certain dresses.

@Oneeleven: I guess that could be another option, but it would really depend on the type of gown she chooses. I think it’s generally impossible to add length after the fact (without a giant seam around your dress), unless her skirt is made out of tulle.

I am 5’9″ on the button and a lot of the sample gowns I tried on were too long for me. I’m sure they vary by designer, but you will probably have a little wiggle room. Maybe go try some on and see?
