We’re tryng to come up with our lists. We’re finding that coming up with songs we don’t want played is hard because if I hate a song, I generally don’t pay attention to the artist/title.
So, I want to see your “Do not play” and “Must play” lists for your DJ or band!

we’re asking for no “bar mitzvah” songs. haha I didn’t know what else to call it – group dance songs? like the electric slide or i think there is one now called the cupid shuffle? too cheesy for us.

We don’t have our lists yet (too early) but we already know the chicken dance will be on “do not play”, as well as the electric slide since we are going to have the cupid shuffle on our must play list ;o) (and they’re essentially the same thing)

- Wedding: August 2013 - Brookfield Zoo
Here’s our DJ’s do not play list (the “Stale” list at the top): http://www.toastandjamdjs.com/ToastandJamSongList.pdf It’s fairly comprehensive so hopefully it’ll help you out!

We don’t really have a do not play list, but on our must play list we have:
- Grease Mega Mix
- Summer of 69
- The Twist
- Everybody Backstreet’s Back
- Surfin USA
- A Little Less Conversation
- Walk This Way
- I Want To Hold Your Hand
- Twist and Shout
- Dancing Queen
Etc. We also had a list of a bunch of slow dances we added to that too. (We want lots of slow dances so we can dance together!)

@elysion: That was incredibly helpful! Thanks. 😀

We’re still working on this one, but we’ve got a few songs on each list at this point.
- Wonderful Tonight- Eric Clapton
- Unchained Melody- Righteous Brothers
- Shout- Isley Brothers
- You’re the Inspiration- Chicago
- Cha Cha Slide
- My Best Friend- Tim McGraw
Do Not Play
- Chicken Dance
- Electric Slide
- Anything Beiber/ One Direction/ Carly Rae Jepson/ etc.
As you can see, most of our must play songs are slower ones. Neither of us know a whole lot about current pop music, or how to dance to it, so I want to make sure that we have a few songs here and there to dance too haha.
We also have a handful of songs picked out for our special songs, or otherwise they definitely would have been on the must play list:
- First dance: Warmness on the Soul- Avenged Sevenfold
- Anniversary Dance: God Gave Me You Blake Shelton
- Last Dance: Hey Pretty Girl- Kip Moore

Chicken Dance haters! Ha ha! Personally I love that cheesy song but I understand… it’s mostly for the 3 to 5 year old age group… and the occasional 30-something.

Fiance is putting “Dolla Wine” on our “Play this!” list, but at least I know that everyone will get up and dance.
@CakeyP ; OMG, I wanted to the Dolla Wine song but my fiance didn’t understand why… and only one of my friends know it other than me. So we’re ditching the idea… 🙁

We let our DJ have free reign and it was just fine – he mixed it up and played something for everyone. Just a thought. The only songs we told him were the first dance and entrance songs.

Do not play:
techno, choreographed dance songs,@jasonkatie2014: yes to no “bar mitzvah” songs. Fiance does event lighting and has put his foot down regarding anything they play at bar mitzvahs!
American Wedding-Gogol Bordello
anything by Reel Big Fish
You better you bet- The Who
Get up offa that thing- James Brown
You shook me all night long-AC/DC
(That’s all I can think of right now)

We said Do Not Play line dances, no country or classical music, or any bands/musicians we don’t like, even if people requested them (sorry!)… “Must Play” was lots of Sinatra and Beatles during cocktail hour, our songs that we picked for various activities/events such as the cake cutting, first dance, entrance music, etc. We mainly just wanted to have fun music everyone could dance to. It was perfect.
