How many of y’all had both cake and cupcakes at your reception?
My dude and I are big sweets-lovers, and I bake for pretty much every family event ever. So I had originally thought I’d bake my own cake. Well, he and my momma forbid it because they want me to not stress about the cake but just enjoy it on the special day. I’m totally okay with that, especially since Future Mother-In-Law has a coworker that makes beautiful cakes and Future Mother-In-Law herself has offered to pay for the cake, if we just tell her what we want. Well, I’ve come to a compromise–where I’ll get to bake the week of (not day before or of!) and still get to enjoy the big cake without worrying about it. I think I’m going to let FMIL’s coworker make the cake, and that it will be a combination of the cakes below.
And then I figure I can do my own bit of baking by doing a groom’s cake for my future hubby! I’ll do chocolate cupcakes (since I can definitely do those without much stress and can even ice them before the day-of) and then I’ll form them into the shape of a football! What do we think, bees?
This is kind of what I’ll be going for:
What did your cakes and/or groom’s cakes look like? Did anyone do the shape-your-cupcakes thing?

We’re having cupcakes, top tier cutting cake and a grooms cake. An Avengers one!

Husband and I are BIG dessert people. We had four flavour of cupcakes (Chocolate with Espresso icing, Lemon with lemon buttercream, Red velvet with cream cheese frosting and vanilla bean with salted caramel icing), then we had a groom’s cakes, with was a butter peacan with butter cream frosting, which was a huge camo coloured cupcake. On top of that we had a four flavour cheese cake bar.
The next day one of DH’s great-aunts had the audacity to tell me that there was ‘too much dessert’ at our wedding. I was confused as I had never heard those words in that order/combination before and had no idea what she meant. I told her if that is the only thing that there was to complain about we much have thrown one hell of a party.
Our guests loved the selection and that they were able to sample as many or as few as they liked. We also had boxes for people to wrap up cupcakes to take home.

@PoppyH: that’s fantastic! That’s exactly the vision of what Fiance and I want.

@sassyshoeskate: I think the groom’s cake cupcakes will be a great idea! It’s not something that will be missed, so if things get too hectic before the wedding you don’t absolutely have to do it.

@Soon2BD-CBee: oops, sorry I realized that the photo was taken before all the cupcakes were out. Something that I just wanted to throw at you, is that we also did mini-cupcakes as well as the full sized, that way our guests were able to try all the flavours with out all the waste.

We will be doing a small round cake for cutting at the top of the stand, and the rest of the 5 tiers with mini cupcakes. I loooove this bakery.

@PoppyH: mini cupcakes sound brilliant. We are going have 2 types, 1 with champagne coloured frosting and a red rose on top and then the other way around.

Thanks for all the great feedback! And, yes, I mentioned the idea of mini cupcakes to build the football cake, and fiance loved it! He said then people can have vanilla wedding cake and a bite or two of chocolate! 🙂
I la-la-la-love all of your wedding dessert ideas!!
