Dresses with zippers/buttons and dresses with corset backs are made exactly the same.  It’s not the lace-up corset back that gives any type of support – support comes from the boning and structure in the dress, which most dresses have regardless of closure type.  Corset lacing is just a closure method, and the only benefit of it is the ability to adjust sizing (although really if it doesn’t fit correctly it shouldn’t be used for that purpose.  I think corset backs make for lazy fitting).

My dress is classified as a mermaid, although it’s not as pronounced as a lot of them.  I have a zipper and buttons, but there is also boning in the dress, under-layers, and a waist stay.  All of those help “hold you in” the same way they would if the zipper and buttons happened to be swapped out for corset lacing.  Here’s a picture.  I’m size 6/8 in street clothes, size 12 dress, and I have curves.

following! In love with mermaids but haven’t tried on any (or any dresses yet, waiting for my stepmom to be able fly out to go with me).

pattoo:  THANK YOU for the compliments!  I had twinges of dress regret (nothing to make me want a different dress, just make me question things), so you really made my day!

It’s Justin Alexander 8656.  Here is a picture of the front.  I got it in Ivory (pictured below) instead of the Light Gold I tried on above (which is part of the regret).

I think ivory looks great! It’s very “bridal” :). You can wear a light gold dress to any event, but when else are you gonna wear a white gown?!
